Can I connect two amps to my AKSonics?
« on: 7 Nov 2004, 10:52 pm »
I have built a pair of AKSonics  (that sound great) , but I want to integrate them into my home theater setup. I want to use my AKSA for stereo and Surround amp for 5.1. Is it possible to have both my AKSA 55 and surround amp hooked up to the AKSonics at the same time? ( just turn off the amp not in use)

Thanks Brownee

Does your HT amp have RCA outputs for the two main channels? Basically can you bypass the HT amp and use only the pre-amp section on the front channels? If you can plug those outputs into the AKSA inputs then Rob's your fathers brother...

Mind you, this way the HT amp will ALWAYS be your pre-amp but all you have to do if you just want to listen to 2 channel is switch to stereo mode on the HT and you're away.

ON the plus side, you movies will sound way better with the good noise from the AKSA out front rather than the movie amp. The movie amp will handle the remaining centre and rear channels.

I don't think it's a good idea to have both amps hooked up to the speaker at the same time. I have a HT and stereo setup which are separate but share the main speakers and I just do a banana plug shuffle when changing from one to the other which takes about 20 seconds. Just means you have to have 2 sets of speaker leads, one from the HT amp and one from the ASKA.

If your HT amp has pre-outs, just run the one for main speakers to one of your pre-amp inputs, set your stereo pre-amp volume at 12 o'clock and set your levels on the HT amp to suit.

The AKSonics are set up for biwire, with four terminations at the back.

The top two are the tweeter, the bottom two are the woofer.  There is still the crossover between these terminals and the drivers, but two amps can be used.  You do need to split the input to the two amps from the source so both are driven simulatneously, and, of course, you need to have the levels set identically.

Works a treat!
