Connecting studio monitors to a PC
« on: 25 Jun 2016, 01:36 am »
How does one connect a pair of studio monitors to a PC if the monitors have only 1/4" jacks? Will you likely have noise issues if one uses a 1/8" to dual 1/4" mono cable and plugs into the headphone jack of the PC?

I was looking to splurge on a pair of monitors for the office and was thinking about the JBL LSR305s. But then I thought perhaps I would be better off with something a little more consumer friendly that has RCA or 1/8" input.

Most motherboards have 1/4" audio out jacks, look in the back of your PC. Unless you have a laptop.

I've never seen a motherboard with a 1/4" jack.  3.5mm / 1/8 in. , yes, 1/4", no.

Yeah, just get and adapter or wire up a cable yourself.

Not sure I'd want to listen directly to a PC via JBL305's.

Cable adaptors aren't the problem, crummy sound quality from the PC revealed by the 305's would be.

Do you have an alternative recommendation?

Using a cable with 1/8 on one side and dual 1/4 on the other works fine as long as the cable is of decent quality.

If you want better sound than the default sound card in your computer, you may want to look into getting an external dac that you can connect via USB.
