A similar effect is cognitive dissonance, which is where you hold two opposing views in your mind at the same time and choose the one you "like".
I'll give you an example:
The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Dietary Intervention Trial, where they took 49,000 women and split them into two groups, a group under test and a control group. The group under test was actively counseled to reduce the fat content of their diet, to eat more fruits and vegetables, etc. What did they do? They ate less overall fat, less saturated fat, more fruits and vegetables, less red meat, fewer calories, etc., than the control group. The result after 8 years and 400+ MILLION dollars? Nothing. No benefit for cancer, heart disease, weight, nothing.
The reporting on this from the "experts" was basically "Our recommendations aren't changing." What? The low fat diet was a complete failure. You should at least look to possibly allow more fat in the diet, but they can't bring themselves to do this.
