14bsst2 to 28bsst2 upgrade?
« on: 5 Jun 2016, 03:24 am »
Hi all,

Recently I upgraded from a 4bsst2 to a 14bsst2.  The 14bsst2 certainly has a “bigger” sound, more airy, more natural, lows are definitely tighter and more present, and highs are smoother.  Overall the sound is more real.  I am quite happy with the 14bsst2.  But I must admit, I am suffering from upgraditis.., again...  So I am wondering if I would achieve similar improvements if I were to upgrade to the 28bsst2 monos or not..  If anyone has gone from 14bsst2 (or 7bsst2)  to 28s please give me your feedback.

Thank you in advance..

Some may deny it, others may agree with me, but I think the 28's are special. Bryston says all the amps have the same house sound, but for some reason, when I heard the 28's, I knew these are not typical solid state amps and not like the other Bryston amps.

Supremely musical, smooth, even across the board, non-aggressive, powerful yet easy flow to the music, tremendous 3D and air with powerful bass.

I think you might hear some differences. The reason is the additional wattage in the Class A region before it moves into AB. That's probably the same experience you heard moving from the 4 to the 14 so unless you listen at very high SPL's you may experience a similar thing.

Now seems to be a good time to get into 28B-SST2's as there is an abundance coming up on the used market.

I believe in maximum power reserves, so the 28B2 may be perfect for some spkrs with low sensitivities. I suspect that the jump from the 4B2 to 14B2 is more substantial (sound-wise and from my system's perspective) than from 14B2 to 28B2.

I would still try to audition the 28's if possible (@tie_breaker). Not sure how easily his new 14B2's would sell on the used market, now that the cubies are coming out and getting +ve press.

 8) Leave it to James to settle an argument. So that makes the 28's twice as good as the 14's,  :P

Depends on the speakers. What speakers do you have?

I wouldn't unless you plan on moving into different speakers later on. You may have hit the ceiling with the 14B. The speakers will sound like they have more control with 28s, the sonic advantages of monos and extra power but I am not sure it warrants the price. Basically the price of another 14B.  Those are nice speakers.

Good points.

Also depends a lot on type of music he listens to. I do a lot of symphonies, so controlled power is essential, with all that imaging and wild dynamic swings.

His 802 speakers are nice. Heard them once a while ago at a dealer. Cabinetry and resonance control are under-valued, I think. Still, having that tweeter mounted on top of the cabinet disturbs me; they should have put it inside the cabinet with the other drivers.

Ha!

I have a friend comparing his 14B to the 28B's. I am sure we will have an update sometime late this week. Please keep your fingers crossed.  :singing:

I'm confident he will be very happy with his new 28's.
For me, the 14B hits that sweet spot in me, synergy galore, so end-game here.    :thumb:

Another fan of the 28 series. I had a 4bsst2 but it isnt in the same league.  At all.

The last couple nights I was re-flabbergasted by these amps. how can Bryston make a better amp than this?

I guess we will find out when the 28b3 comes out.
