According to this that should work as you think.

Once you have your closed system, if you still have instances of the mini and the ipad losing contact with each other the only way I found to fix the problem was to assign fixed IP address to the two of them.  Once you know how only takes a couple of minutes.  Good luck.

Hi Jack,
It works!! Finally got it going. I only copied music files onto the drive, so that's all the Mini could copy. I haven't looked at all the files yet, but a fair amount have the covert art. I need to study all that and I believe any tagging will need to be done on the external drive and copied onto the Mini. I think I'll be able to handle many if not most of the issues that pop up after this. Thanks to you and all for the help and comments.

Congrats Nick, glad you got it to work even though it was the hard way.  I hope you don't run into the problem with the iPad and the Mini losing each other.  It happened to me at least one a day and required going through set up again until I set the static IPs. Since then not a hiccup in over two weeks. This was all with a 5ghz signal of 300mbs.  There is a long and active Mini thread at Computer Audiophile that may be worth reading.  That's where I found out about the static IPs. Some of those people were very early adopters.

Wow - that sounds like a giant PITA! No doubt other options like increasing the lease time and DHCP reservations were tried.  One thing that can be helpful 6 to 12 months down the road is making sure each device's fixed IP is attached to it with a label ... arriving at conflicting addresses when troubleshooting errant behavior can be gnarly!

PITA...yessir  :o  But hey, it works  :thumb:  I will get over to CA and read up on that thread. It's a very good site. Losing  the connection is a concern, so I want to understand and know how to do the static addresses.

I am running the Mini into my Antelope Gold dac and also breaking in the dedicated power supply from Ben at Mojo Audio. Sounds pretty good, but I am getting over a bad cold. Cough syrup with codeine, anyone? At least it's flavored

Nick

I am running mine into the Aqua La Voce and now that it is staying online it sounds really good. Also using an "aftermarket" LPS.  Are you using one of the Cable/phone companies "Gateway" routers or something commercial.  The steps to setting up the static IP's are slightly different with all of them to get to the changing point but in the end it is the same.  There are other ways I am sure to get around the problem, but that is the simplist. I bought a SSD a couple of weeks ago from a promo sale at Newegg, just haven't gotten around to the install.  I use the Mini mostly for Tidal at this point.  Hope you get lucky and don't have the drop out issue.

Jack, thats a nice dac from what I've read. Yes, it's a cable company combo modem/router. No dropouts yet and I really don't expect that to be a problem. My SB 2 didn't have dropout issues either. If I can't figure out the static address issue at some point, the cable company can send a tech to do it and there shouldn't be a charge. Just enjoying some late night tunes right now  :D
