SB Acoustics Announces New Satori Midrange Drivers
« on: 22 May 2016, 06:08 pm »
SBA has finally released the specs on their new Satori 5" and 6.5" midrange drivers. I'm not sure if I can copy/paste the specs, but I know I can supply the links to the SBA website. There is also a new Be dome tweeter that is expected to be released in Q3, 2016.

Wow those look great. Even more stunning are the specs on the six-inch. Fs 32 hz? That's sub territory. Can't wait to see implementation. As a mid it should handle power well, no?

"Can't wait to see implementation."

I've already made an inquiry. Perhaps, I'll have good news before too long.

Jim,

I remember reading many positive posts about the SB29 in different forums. I see there is an SB29 tweeter and an SB29 woofer/subwoofer. Which one are you referring to?

I've recently contemplated buying the Mandolin kit (from Meniscus audio) for my son. It would make a really cool birthday present.

Very nice! Thanks for posting Michael. Do you have Satoris running? I remember you were exploring that at one point not too long ago.

I like the higher sensitivity of the new MR16 vs original Satori MW16. Neo magnets helped there.

And the dip at 1k is much improved too so there is probably some work on the rubber surround. The specs are similar to MW with low Q and low Fs.  :thumb:

Meniscus carries the US165PW1
Motus UH165PW1 - the 165 refers to the cone diameter, not the frame diameter- actual frame size is approximately 18.5 cm.

 Key characteristics:

•FEA optimized Underhung voice coil motor
•Dual shorting rings for flat impedance curve, low inductivity modulation distortion
•Aerodynamic frame design with minimal acoustic shadowing
•Pressed paper cone with minimal resonance at any frequency
•89 dB Sensitivity for 2.83VRMS
•Fs = 33.8Hz
•Optimum Sealed Q of 0.707 with 0.48 cu ft,
•Optimum Vented QB3 alignment with 0.9 cu ft

Just another driver to consider

Anand,

Thank you for the link to that thread. I had not known about it.  :thumb:

Richidoo,

That chat we had about a two-way using the 7.5" Satori never went anywhere. Actually, it was because I visited the SBA website soon after only to discover SBA's announcement of the 'not yet released' midrange drivers. I'll do better with a three-way design using something like your three-way Kairos, but with the 6.5" midrange paired to the neodymium tweeter or Seas Crescendo(?) paired with double 7.5" Satori woofers. Of course, designing such a thing is well beyond my skills, so I'm waiting for a certain individual's email response to my inquiry.

Hi, Carl V.

Thanks for the link, but this is a "Satori Lovefest" thread.

Hold your horses! Stop the press! There's exciting news:

I'm blessed to live in this day and age (and have just enough of a balance in my Paypal account to pull it off). I just learned of the <near future>  existence of 9.5" Satori woofers.  :o  8)  Now what do I do? How long must I wait till these are released? Do I move ahead with ordering a 3-way using two 7.5" drivers, or do I force myself to be patient? Sigh.

http://techtalk.parts-express.com/forum/tech-talk-forum/1279442-well-hello-new-satori-drivers-coming/page2

In the current issue of Voice-coil Magazine, there is an 'ad' for SB Acoustics upcoming 9.5" woofer. It appears as if this is the production model of the 9.5" woofer revealed in this thread a while back. This driver's model designation is Satori W024-P8, and it looks damn sexy!! One thing is certain; SB Acoustics has a batch of highly desirable audio goodness in store...

Now for the second bit of news (unrelated to Satori drivers):

Jeff Bagby has just announced the release of his SpiritWind two-way design to Meniscus Audio. The SpiritWind uses the Audio Technology 18H52-17-06-SD midwoofer and the Scanspeak D9900 Revelator tweeter. It will be available as a kit.

The New SB Acoustics Satori Drivers for 2016 (pictures provided in the link at the bottom)

As audioXpress anticipated, SB Acoustics (a brand of Sinar Baja Electric) introduced several new products for 2016, including the brand’s flagship TW29BN high-end beryllium dome tweeter, part of the Satori top performing driver range. The new range, all designed in Denmark and manufactured in Indonesia, also includes new midrange and midwoofer drivers using new proprietary cones made with Egyptian Papyrus fibers, available in 5” to 9.5” sizes.

Once again, SB Acoustics introduced their completely new driver lineup for the year at the High End show in Munich. The new products are the visible result of an intense R&D effort that started in 2009, when Danesian Audio in Denmark became 100% owned by Sinar Baja Electric, focusing on the evolution of the SB Acoustics catalogue, culminating in 2015 with the launch of the new high end Satori range. As the company’s 2016 catalogue states, “Unique products are not made overnight. Enthusiasm, expertise and perfection makes the difference.”

The SB Acoustics products can be used in many different applications, but they remain at the top of the scale in terms of quality. For 2016, the company launched new midrange and tweeter drivers on the Satori line, expanded the range of subwoofers in the catalogue, with more models coming, and basically a whole range of improved versions of previous designs.

Beryllium Premiere at High End 2016
The new Satori TW29BN High-End Beryllium Tweeter was the main highlight for the High End show. The new tweeter combines dual copper caps for absolute minimum voice coil inductance and minimum phase shift, and dual balanced compression chambers for improved dynamics. The beryllium dome was selected for its non-resonant high frequency extension and its design and integration perfected over two years of intense research, sampling and testing in the company’s research facilities, in Denmark.

The design combines also a CCAW 29mm voice coil for low moving mass, produced under the most rigorous conditions and combined with long life silver lead wires. The high saturation neodymium motor system with T-shaped pole piece for low distortion is coupled with a non-reflective cast aluminum chamber with optimized damping for improved dynamics. Nominal impedance of 4 ohm and DC-resistance of 3 ohm, with a resonance frequency of 725 Hz, 9.6 cm2 piston area and 95dB sensitivity.

As Frank Nielsen explains, the Satori range was founded to separate more expensive projects from a wider range of more affordable - but still high-end - SB Acoustics products. “As we get more experience, new materials, better simulation tools, we believe in benefiting the customer with those improvements. We always knew that geometry is essential and we are working more and more with geometry. Every time we get new materials, like beryllium, and we optimize the designs, there’s always room for improvement. We’ve been able to implement significant improvements with beryllium, and we could obtain pretty good results in combination with geometry.”

“We have been measuring and testing with beryllium for the past two years, done tons of samples, tons of different assembly methods. Beryllium started something completely new and we had to learn how to control it. You can’t just take a known design. We had to understand which areas had the most benefits in terms of the cost,” adds Frank Nielsen.

Egyptian Papyrus
Also under the Satori brand are two new 5” and 6.5” midrange drivers, MR13P-4 and MW16PNW-4, respectively, featuring black or natural white cones using Egyptian Papyrus fibers produced in house with a proprietary method, combined with soft low damping rubber surrounds for optimum transient response and low resonance frequency. The cones reveal the natural textures of the papyrus material imported from Egypt, resulting in a distinctive appearance, which will certainly be appreciated for high-end speakers.

For these new Satori drivers, the original ideal was to keep the natural finish of the Papyrus fibers as much as possible, which results in a light brown color. Since Papyrus fibers are not uniform, the cone shows visible spots of different colors which give it a look of a natural “organic” material - but the discussion about potential problems in the market arising from the wrong perception that those were “defects” or signs of an “old” driver, led the design team to also create a black version of the same cone. The fibers are still visible, but for more traditional clients, it might be better accepted.

The smaller MR13P-4 midrange driver uses a powerful neodymium motor system optimized for low distortion, combined with a non-conductive fibre glass voice coil former for minimum damping and CCAW 30.5 mm voice coil for reduced moving mass. The extended copper sleeve on the pole piece results in low inductance and reduced distortion, while the vented pole piece and coil former result in reduced compression. The MR13P-4 achieves a sensitivity of 91dB with 6mm linear excursion. There is also a 6.5” version of this midrange driver, while the larger MW16PNW-4 midwoofer is also available in 7.5”.

The MW16PNW-4 uses a carefully designed neodymium motor with a 36mm fibre glass voice coil combined with the same proprietary Egyptian Papyrus cone, with a lower resonance frequency at 28Hz (41Hz on the MR13P-4). Its linear excursion (XMAX) is an impressive 12mm with a sensitivity of 90.5 dB at 4 ohms.
audioXpress will provide details for other new SB Acoustics drivers in separate posts.

The new MR16P-4 midrange driver is the one I'm excited about! 92.5dB sensitivity! Matches the original Satori ferrite (92dB) tweeter perfectly, for a 3 way project.  No tweeter resistor! Add a pair of 90dB 8ohm woofers in parallel for the bass. Maybe the 9.5" Satoris?

So far, there are four Satori 16cm drivers:

midrange 4ohm neo          92.5
midwoofer ferrite 4ohm     90.5
midwoofer ferrite 8ohm     87.5
midwoofer neo 4ohm         ???

The article says there will be a 19cm neo 4 ohm midwoofer. That should be  93.5dB or better since ferrite version is 91.5.

Now we need a neo 9.5" 8 ohm.  :hyper:

You mean this one:
https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-6-7-woofers-satori/satori-mw19p-4-7.5-egyptian-papyrus-cone-woofer-4-ohm/

That driver has been out for a little while. What's new is the "natural white" cone color variant. They also have a fourth size coming (9.5").

Also, all of the current Satori woofers have neo magnets.
