Danny posted this link on Madisound, I hope he doesn't mind me posting it here. He's got pics and measurements from the Texas DIY speaker event up on his site

Someone brought along a "White Van" speaker... it's pretty amusing

JohnR,

Outside of the comments on Keith's site, do you have any threads on any message boards from attendee's mentioning what they heard, what they liked, and disliked?  I'd love to read some indepth impressions.

There's truly some beautiful speakers in those pictures.

Thanks for the links.

Also -- whether at a glance, or someone that knows that attended, can anyone identify the room treatment used behind the speakers in the picture of the Alpha LS offhand?

I can only imagine how bad the white van speakers must have sounded. The response curve looks like a terrain map. :)

cjr, there were probably threads on it on the madisound board, you could try a search there but things do tend to disappear after a while there.

I wish I owned any of that.... except the White Van speakers, I would for free however destroy them, maybe plug them into a wall :) that'd get the mid moving

My brother actually got me some white van speakers. 5 speakers plus sub for $150. THey arent completely worthless if properly set up. The sub is actually the best part as the satellites tend to be harsh. I have them hooked up to an old 5.1 ready Onkyo and a Panasonic with built in DD and DTS decoders. For $550 not a bad setup. Eh? :|

Room treatment
The room treatment was some of the foam wedges from our anechoic chamber. The rooms would have really been unusable without it.

GR Research moved earlier this year and I now have a lot of the foam in storage.

I will build a new chamber soon, but for now I believe I would like to get the foam out of storage and let it go to good use.

I have already been selling it to my audiophile buddies for them to use as room treatment. If anyone is interested in getting some let me know. I will sell it pretty cheap.

I have 2' by 2' squares that are 12" thick (in Purple).

I have 1' by 1' squares of it 8" thick (Blue foam).

And I have some 2' by 2' squares of it 4" thick (Grey).

hello,

well i think that is amazing.  the white van speaker scam is exactly what has happened here in perth western australia, and i don't even want to think how many kilometres from the us we are.  well i'm 4000 klms west of sydney to give you an idea.

btw i've heard that the speakers they sell in our own white van scam sound terrible as well.

Hi Rod, this may sound crazy but the white van speaker scam is actually thought out and marketed. Really weird.

Some people have researched this globally. Google the question and see what you find. (lazy.... )

hello ferdi,

thanks for the heads up.  no i haven't been caught out by this scam, but have heard of it and a friend of mine actually was sucked in and bought a pair.

i never listened to them and would never buy anything which has "fallen off the back of a truck".

actually ferdi seeing as how you live in the netherlands have you ever listened to a ah tjoeb cdp?  just curious.  i'm interested in diy or direct manufacturers these days as i think you get a better deal than thru hifi shops, as they only sell what they believe is the best product and bag everything else.  i've just purchased an aksa 100 and should have it finished shortly.

anyway thank you for the heads up.
