Surely they have fixed so the noise in the new version v2. It was an amazing bad data, especially when the amplification is with Hypex (class D). Something must be wrong in tube preamp section.

Thanks for the links Maty.  They pretty much universally praise the amp, both new and earlier versions.  Don't know if the V2 addresses your concerns about noise levels, no one else seems bothered by it.  On my short list for the next upgrade.

The amp isn't noisy from what I experienced.  None of the issues that I thought applied related to noise. I probably spent 5-8 hours with it, mostly listening to jazz.

So I'm gathering it was a power issue with your listening session?  Was it generally lacking in dynamics, or just couldn't reach higher levels without strain?  And btw, thanks for your distaff viewpoint, it's good to hear well considered opinions regardless of the result. Unrestrained dynamics at medium listening levels are important to me.  I'd be running them with Meadowlark Audio Shearwater Hot Rods, not the most efficient speaker.

A group of us had met at the local record store for a listening session and my bud brought the Sphinx.  On my Neo 2x's it strained noticeably to play  with dynamics in a medium size room with a half dozen listeners.  I had brought a 30 wpc 6L6GC amp that was a much better match.  Back at my friends house, on his small Focal bookshelf speakers in a small room (12X14?) and at much lower volumes (he listens at lower volumes than I prefer), it performed much better with pretty decent imaging and detail.  However, when I loaned him my pair of 6qb5 integrated amps that Gary Dodd had built for me, he put his Sphinx up for sale.  The Dodds were much fuller, better soundstage, just as much detail, but perhaps a bit weaker in bass.  Actually, they are darned good sounding little amps.
The extras that the Sphinx provide however are substantial.  The phono section is quite decent, and although I never used it, my friend had good words for the headphone amp.
All in all, the Sphinx is a decent little amp.  I was surprised at finding the 100wpc rating, as it seemed lacking.  They are a bit dry for my taste, but everyone likes something a little different. :thumb:

Actually the amp I auditioned at the dealer was a modified version 1 amp.  They also had the version 2 in stock but I didn't have enough time to hear both.  The amp I listened to was modded by the owner of Rogue so the performance might be similar to that of the latest version.  Either way I was very impressed and look forward to more listening time with the amp.

Just wanted to give an update.

I ended up getting a lightly used Sphinx from a seller on line and have it installed in my system.

Early impressions of the amp are very good, it seems to have tons of power and bass with my full range speakers.  I swapped the stock JJ tubes from some Telefunkens I've had and letting them get some hours playing at low volume. I'll do some more intent listening later this weekend. Excited to hear how it performs.
