Listening chair back height?
« on: 2 May 2016, 07:45 pm »
I am considering purchasing this used cloth recliner for listening to my rig. I realize that I should not get a chair whose back rises up behind my head. My ears are a couple of inches higher than the back of it, but only a couple. And it does have a rather wide wingspan. Do you think this chair would be fine for listening or not?

I have two wingback chairs, one lower than the other, and find both affect listening in negative ways.  The lower one, similar in height to your example, has a much less pronounced effect than the other, but both muffle the sound.  I lean forward a bit and the sound comes back in to focus.  YMMV.

I vote no.

Here is what I am after for next room coming up. Has electric headrest that brings your head away from the chair back.

Now that's a chair! Problem is, I'd fall asleep in the SOB.

Hello : Not sure if any others are like me but after trying every chair possible, I ended up using a Cloth seat Computer chair ( with arms ) ......It is comfortable, height adjustable, sits straight or reclines and is narrow enough to disappear in the sweet spot....I purchased it at Staples where they had plenty to test drive in the store.....

Comfort > Sound. If I fall asleep that's ok.

Man that thing looks comfy as all get out. Assuming the price is right give it a shot, if not happy I bet you can find another spot.........like in front of the TV !

Obviously not a vinyl fan.

but both muffle the sound

I went back and sat in it again ... and listened. Even though the back is lower than my ears it does seem to muffle ambient sound. And I especially am afraid of how it kind of wraps around a bit at the top as well.

Living in Hot-tlanta with big power tubes and summer approaching, I'm going to need to stay away from leather/pleather/vinyl and stick with some kind of cloth. That thing does look like a chair Darth Vadar would use in his man cave.

Good suggestion, except I sit in one all day for work. My ass is complaining for a change of scenery for my evenings.

Hmm ... good idea! I've always wanted one for TV. And if I fall asleep ... so be it.

I was thinking that if it didn't work out for audio I could at least sit comfortably in it to knit my doilies. Thanks for the idea Bob!

Actually you're right in a way. I like the sound but I wear out needles because I might drowse off. We're talking about extremely small differences in quality, with chairs, anyway. "Diminishing returns" is exemplified in chair choice.

You guys are into this audio thing too deeply. In a minute, somebody is gonna come along and suggest a DIY, ear-height adjustable, three legged stool with spikes.

Danny,
take a look at some of the other "chair" threads and you will find that there is no consensus as to what is best.
Hey a chair at a good price is worth a try. Get a booster seat for those critical listening sessions... Should be an easy sell if you don't like it..

Still digging the Twistin Tarantulas :green:

Thanks Bob. Yeah, I am poking around for info. In my unscientific pea-brain I was thinking perhaps some audio genius might say something like, "as long as your ear hole is 6.5" away from the top of the back of the chair, you should be good as those frequencies ... blah blah blah ..."

Glad you still like them Twistin' Tarantulas. I do love that kind of music.  :thumb:

Best of luck with the search!

My wife and I listen to vinyl in a near field environment, and find these "high back" gliders from BEST Chair company very fitting for the job. I think that it is important to "remove" that back splash, so the high back serves a purpose in our listening room.

They are gliders, but they also swivel so I have easy access to my most listened to vinyl collection. It works out pretty good, but I can't claim that it was "designed' this way...it just happened.

You might have something there Wayner.  Mostly flat back, at least no wings, and overstuffed.  Maybe one of the acoustics guys can chime in, but that padding has to stop some level of reflections.  What attenuation at what frequencies is where those guys can commence the chiming in, but my guess is that it's pretty good over a limited range of higher frequencies.  And they look real comfy.

I understood leather type chairs, if they have a large surface, can lead to odd reflections of sound, and therefore cloth type seats are better.

I have plenty of room treatment and have a high back chair (see my gallery - Less Smaller Room - New Arrangement). When I've experimented by using a stool, trying to get the same height and position as I would with the chair, I couldn't hear any obvious difference. Perhaps if I didn't have room treatment I would hear something.

When I move my head forward whilst sitting in the chair it adds something to the sound - more higher frequencies I think, like percussion. However, the same applied when sitting on the stool so I assume moving my head alters the sound in any case.
