Logitech Media Server issue
« on: 26 Apr 2016, 02:36 pm »
Long time LMS user (had my first SB3 back around 2005) and still enjoy it (most of the time!).

Was away from my setup for a month or so (business and personal travel).  When I try to access my tunes, I find an odd one.

I can tell that there are still X number of files, but all Artist, Playlist etc are blank.

Even more odd if I sort by year I can see all my music.  I can add it to play, but nothing will play.

I tried rebooting the server, and the Touch.  I have tried rescanning the HD where the music lives (5TB).

No love.

Thoughts?

I would hate to have to reinstall LMS and loose the ~800 fav's...

I have tried rescanning my collection (about 60K files).  I have also tried "forget and rescan" of the library.

Both times it appears that the first phase of the scan completes (discovers files on my external HD and does an accurate file count).  And then does not do anything else.  I recall that there were about 3-4 other phases in a scan.

Have you tried uninstalling LMS and reinstalling the same or another version?

This is often an indication of "damaged" tags in the media library. Have you recently added any music files with e.g. Unicode (or other non-ascii) characters in tags or file names?
Could also be ownership issue on some of the files/folders. Make sure all the folders and subfolders have appropriate permissions (visible to and accessible by everyone).

I have not added any files since Christmas.  It was all working well for months before my extended travels (and thus lack of use) began.

If I uninstall, I will lose all my saved playlists and fav's correct?

that is what is holding me back from further exploration.

I am away on business for the rest of the week anyway, so I will keep researching.

Thanks for the help guys.

Did an uninstall and checked no to removing all setting info.   Have reinstalled a new lms version (7.9, previous was 7.7.5) and dealing with Windows 10 installing.

Scan has progressed into the later steps I recall.  We will see.

Sorted (ish).

The good news is that Windows 10 is up and running on the netbook.  Better news is that LMS 7.9 loaded properly.  Excellent news that the full scan of my library completed and my Fav's are saved.

I can survive the loss of my 5 playlists.  I really only used 2 for pool nights with my friends, and I can rebuild those.  Having to comb the collection and ID my ~800 favorites would have sucked.

Of course the new s/w on the server is trying to force my Touch to download new s/w too, but I am sticking with EDO on the Touch.

So, if you find yourself in a tough spot around LMS understand that you can remove the program fully, but retain your fav's when you install a new version.

Personally, I miss the interface of the LMS.  I liked that I could play all my music and just uncheck things like "children's", "Christmas", etc.  I can't do that on Sonos or iTunes.  Instead, I have to set up a list with all this music in it.  When I try to add everything to a list/playlist in iTunes, iTunes crashes.  So, I have to add each album individually or maybe a few albums at a time, and I've never taken the time to do that.

LMS is the only server s/w I have ever used.  I have no idea what I would go through if I had to try to use something else!

I get that people feel that there is better s/w, or that the h/w I use could be improved on, but for streaming tunes with a large library on the cheap, this just fits the bill.  Perfectly.  Not 100%, as this issue did creep up, but after 10-11 years of use I would say the ROI is phenomenal.

I did post on the Computer Audiofile site a year or more ago asking if the h/w for your LMS server matters from a sound quality perspective.  The belief at that time was - spend your $ elsewhere (DAC etc).

I still have two squeezeboxes and use LMS all the time (using it now in fact).  I tried to transition to Sonos, but I like LMS better.  Sonos is better if you want a system to play in separate rooms (they have amps for each room, independent control per room, etc.), but SBs work well if you don't have that many locations or want the same music everywhere.  I use iTunes because I have an iPod.  iTunes is the worst freaking interface ever.  It's truly horrible if you have a large collection.

Now, there are many streaming devices.  My wife got an Amazon Echo, and now just streams music.  She doesn't listen to our library, as she can say "Alexa, play music" (Alexa is the name of the Echo) or "Alexa, play Channel X", and there's music.  There's no need to find the iPad/phone, open an app, find something to play, etc.
