Hi, here is a set of Jordan L/C/R speakers under construction in my high-tech home workshop. This pic is after the first coat of oil, they look a bit better in real life. The boxes are sealed, about 8 liters.

Hi John

What sort of wood are you using?  The pictures remind me of some black wattle I came across recently in meeting some Aboriginal folk here in Brisbane.  I had never seen it before and it intrigues me!

Hi lonewolf, yes I did, although there are not very many. Still a long way to go before I work up to the "ultimate" speaker ;)

Hi Ian, it's called redgum but it's actually the heartwood of American sugar maple I believe. The sides are maple-apple ply. I had these pieces in the US and shipped them back. There are still a few bits left over but I need to start looking for new sources of wood soon .... black wattle hm...

very cool, let me know how you like them.   I have considered doing Jordan's all around in a HT setup but then I have considered a lot of things.

Hi John

I am going to hunt some of this black wattle up (pardon the pun).  I have been given a contact for it and the wood has the same light and dark effects in it.

Apparently it is not a commercial wood but the local tribespeople around Brisbane use it in many of their crafts and it is regarded as a pest species by farmers and they get it free from the trees but then need to process it somewhat before its ready for use and therefore there would be some costs associated with getting it.

I'll let you now if and when I can source some of it.

John, what are the dimensions of the centre channel - looks to be around 18x6x6 - I am looking to build up a 0.3 foot centre using the new DIY Cable WR125 full range driver.

I like the shape of yours, and I know that the volume would work well.

Thanks,

Bit bigger, 6.5 x 10 x 21. I think it's about 8 liters internal. I had a spreadsheet at one point that accounts for wall thickness and bracing etc.

I'm curious as to whether a WR125S would bolt straight into the hole. But I'm not changing them now

Initial impression are that they are cleaner than my PR version. Even without any break-in, which is odd... anyway it must be the effect of all the stuffing, I forget the name of the stuff. Grand plan is to add Neo3 ribbons on top and 10" subs underneath.

Thanks for the reply John, I appreciate your sharing.

Funny that you are building something so similar, yet using a slightly different driver.  I will also examine the possibility of a 10 inch sub for bass, but that is down the road for me.
