Super Hans

Hi, so basically I'm looking at buying an asynchronous 24 bit USB DAC. I don't want to spend much more than $200.
I've kind of narrowed it down to the Shiit Modi 2 (around $150 for the Uber model http://schiit.com/products ) and the Pro-Ject USB Box S+ (around $250, that's the ceiling on the dac budget. http://www.box-designs.com/main.php?prod=usbboxsplus&cat=source&lang=en)
If you know of any worth considering against these two please feel free to tell me.

So far my criteria are
1. Asynchronous USB 24bit with RCA out
2. The smaller desktop size like those 2 above.

The Pro-Ject DAC has higher sample rates. 32/384 vs 24/192 (I'm not sure I would be using anything above 24/192 as I don't see much music sold higher than that right now. Maybe that is insurance for the future.)
From what I can tell neither of those are made in China. I'll buy the best one for the best price like anyone. But I would like to support good audio gear made elsewhere too.

I have considered DAC/Amp/Headphone Amp combos but have settled on buying a separate DAC unit.

Thank You

SMSL M8 DAC retails for $250 and can be had for less.  Lots of good press at head fi, and will do DSD.  It's compact, has RCA outputs, and allows for Toslink and SPDIF on RCA inputs to boot.  Here is a link via Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/SMSL-Audio-M8-DAC/dp/B017VXPDJG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1459972566&sr=1-2&keywords=smsl+m8+dac
Uses one of the better Sabre 32 bit processor chips.  Sound is generally described and clean, clear, detailed without being harsh.  One can select from a few choices of output filters as well.

The Schiit is made in USA and Pro-ject, an Austrian based company, AFAIK manufactures in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.  Both have a 2-year warranty.

Both have an external power supply (not running off USB power) which also allows swapping out the switching power supply for a linear supply if desired.

The Schiit does not upsample whereas the Project upsamples to 352.8kHz or 384kHz, depending on the source sample rate.  There are proponents for both unaltered native processing and upsampling; the theory behind upsampling being that digital aliasing filters can be applied at higher frequencies with less negative effect on the audio band (and the Pro-ject does have a two-position selectable filter).

I also do like the source sample rate indicators on the Pro-ject.

I think either would be a good choice, unfortunately it would probably be difficult to find a comparison between these two, unless you have the option of buying both with a no-hassle return of the "loser".

IFI Nano iDSD gets my vote.

Also I think it's important that people audition different dacs because presentation will differ based on the chip used - The Project uses Burr Brown, the Schiit an AK I believe. Very different presentations IME. Get several and return the ones you don't like.

Thanks all,
I hadn't thought about DSD.
I'll have to ponder that a bit

I've had a few cheap usb dacs, geek out v2 sounded the best, sounds more like a big desktop dac than a usb powered one

Another one is the Meridian Audio Explorer2 USB DAC.  Does MQA decoding as well up to 24bit/192KHz.

About ready to give mine a try with a Raspberry Pi3 and Moode Audio server.
