Takata airbag recall - More cars added
« on: 2 Apr 2016, 10:55 pm »
Seems they keep adding more and more cars to the list of recalls.
The metal in the bag is corroding/disintegrating and causing "unintended rapid inflation that contains metal components" (that's code for "the grenade went off in your face without warning).

Some car manufacturers are paying for loaner cars (ie: Enterprise cars) until parts come in. The Honda/Acura dealers near me are telling folks it may be as much as nine months before parts are available. In the mean time, enjoy your new rental car.
Now....I don't blame the car manufacturers, as they don't make airbags. They went to a company that specializes in making them. Well, they didn't do it correctly and have caused tens of millions of cars to contain "grenades" in front the driver and/or passenger.

The car my son drives isn't paying for an Enterprise car (they wouldn't anyway, since their insurance won't pay for teenagers, so it really doesn't matter in my case.
So, in the mean time, I'll take matters in my own hands and remove the damn thing myself, until such time parts are available.

So, be safe my friends. Check to see if you car is on the list.

BUT... I don't suggest you go ripping the airbag out of your car. This is an explosive device you're messing with. Not only that, it's an explosive device that was manufacturers with materials that have degraded over the years and/or was built improperly.

Be safe my peoples.

I like the way my sons face looks, so... this isn't 24" away from it any more.

Thanks for the public service announcement Bob, much appreciated.  None of my vehicles but I am sure anyone affected appreciate this being brought to their attention.

Best,
Ed

No worries Ed.
They've added more "affected" vehicles a few times, so just because yours isn't on the list today, doesn't mean it won't be tomorrow, next week, or a couple months down the road. Keep checking.

Oh...and don't call you dealer if your car isn't on the list. They won't know, until everybody knows.

Hmmm... funny you call it that. I was mentally giving it the same name.   :?
For now, It'll be in my workshop. Away from human presence.
Tomorrow at work (I work at a dealer) I'll find out if we have the tool to deploy the bag.
If so, I'll have a "boom show" in my back yard with the family and show them what an airbag can do....... from a safe distance, of course.

I thought about buying some slugs and giving it a "deactivation" with my fancy new shotgun. That would work too.  :icon_twisted:

Thanks for the information. My Honda recall notice said it would be this summer before the parts would be available. Until then we have an Altima to drive...  :thumb:

Thanks for the heads up Bob, luckily (or not) all my vehicles are too old to have air bags. It's obvious in your pic there is corrosion/rust already in that unit, nice you have the skills to do the home removal.  :thumb:  In spite of our wettest winter/spring since they started keeping records the slugs haven't shown up yet or I'd sent you some.  :D  It would be fun to see them go flying.  8)

Thanks for the post and link.  Fortunately for us, our cars aren't listed (yet).  I'll keep checking on it.

They added VW, who originally said that because the airbags were made in Germany, they weren't affected. Now, my car (VW Jetta Wagon*) is on the list too.  Bummer.  My wife's car (Subaru Outback) is there too.

* My VW is also a diesel, so has a double whammy against it.

I had to read that a few times to get it.

On the local news this morning, they featured a guy with a Toyota Avalon who received "An urgent recall notice" about his air bag over a year ago, and they still don't have a replacement!
