Just bought a new VPI Scout

Well new to me that is.

Blows away my vintage Sony table. I am getting some noise out phono preamp at about 1 oclock, would the Denon 103r be considered a noisy cartridge? My preamp has pretty low distortion levels so wondering if its the cart??

Did you mount the cartridge?  If not, check it.  The output of the 103r is pretty low- which pre are you using? Does it have enough gain?

Yes Sir I mounted the cart using a Willis protractor for Baerweld alignment. I have the VTF set slightly high as reccomended by VPI. Azimuth is set perfect and VTA looks good. The phono pre is an obscure beast I grabbed on a whim but sounds really good. It has amazing distortion specs, but alas real world is sometimes different matter. It costs some 700 euro. Its powered by a walwart, I wonder if thats an issue? It has 67db gain.

Edit: Sounding much better on an Analog Productions 200g album, might have been noisy vinyl??

Congrats on your Scout! I've run one for about 15 years. It's a great table.

Are you sure it's the phono preamp? If you're concerned about the wall wart, if the voltage is low enough perhaps try jury rigging a battery supply.  It probably draws a really small current, see what the mfg states.

Edit: I'm assuming no tubes.

VPI makes some great tables and they're a great company too.

Was the problem the LP?

What kind of noise is it ?
What is your tracking force ?

That cartridge is on the warm side , not bright

I also use a Ken Willis Accutrak protractor for my Classic with a 10.5i arm along with a Dynavector DV-20x2L feed into a Manley Phono Amp.

Thanks for the feedback, I need to do some more listening as it seemed all was well with different vinyl. I didnt even suspect vinyl being the issue cause its a brand new 180g album.  :duh:

Lets us know what your hearing and check your tracking force.   If I had to pin any issues, I would say phonostage since it appears that stage you have doesn't have any loading for impedence.

That denon likes  2.5 grams for tracking force and also a 100 ohm impedance setting or a little more.

It was definitely the vinyl, what a relief. This album went back but didnt have another copy. Ordered online for $10 cheaper, hoping for the best. Its a great album. http://www.musicdirect.com/p-393196-avishai-cohen-into-the-silence-180g-vinyl-2lp.aspx

Good.  When you step up on the vinyl carousel you don't want to take a step backward, and the Scout should be a nice step up.  One of these days I've got to make a trip to Austin to hear your rig.  I've got a Chinese motor coming for my Vyger, and just built a mount for an arm for it.  Hopefully it will be a step up from a JVC QL-F6... just have to wait and see.
