question about xlr input on stratos
« on: 30 Oct 2004, 02:42 pm »
has anyone done a comparison using the rca inputs and the xlr inputs on the stratos?  I know the xlr input isn't balanced, but I'm considering using it in my new setup.  Does this input degrade the sound in any way? Can you hear a difference between the two?

Vasu,

Here is a picture of one of the mono's. You can see the short piece of wire from the XLR jack to the RCA jack. It's the light blue cable.

I have a BAT preamp and evidently the + and - are opposite to the Odyssey balanced connections.

I just got my monos back from Klaus to convert to the extreme model.  Now I have to rewire them to use the balanced cables due to incompatibility.  Haven't done it yet due to it being a pain in the....

Yep,  the problem with balanced connections is that there isn't a single established standard,  and obviously with all these pins you have several possibilities.  In reality,  I'm not a big fan of balancd,  with some notable exceptions,  such as having a completely balanced system  or running IC's longer than 30 +  feet.

Just because it's balanced doesn't say anything about the actual sound quality, does it ???
