The Bryston 4B-ST Mono Question
« on: 23 Mar 2016, 08:34 pm »
Hello,

I'm new to the audiophile scene.  I'm entering into it via Magnepan .7 that sound so good.  I was putting the funds together and while doing so I did my reading on the right amplification.  I had been using a Yamaha 675 receiver that I knew wouldn't do the Magnepans any justice.  I discovered that the speakers are pretty power hungry requiring 200W to get them to really sing.  I posted on Audiogon to get advice on amps and the Bryston 4B-ST was roundly recommended as the amp in my budget.  The word that was used repeatedly describing the Bryston/Magnepans pair was "synergistic".

So I'm excited about the Bryston 4B-ST.  But I have a question.  I saw on Ebay a single Mono 4B-ST for sale.  I don't know much about amplification with monos other than you use two.  I tried finding out more about them and there was scant information.  I did see one persons opinion that the 4B-ST monos are preferable with the Magnepans.  But I can't really find information or others available to buy.

Can you folks elucidate the advantages/disadvantages of the monos, why the information is scant and few are out there, and are they worth pursuing?

thanks everyone,

Adam

Bryston's 4B series is a stereo amp. Their 7B series is a mono amp. I'm guessing that someone meant to refer to the 7B instead of the 4B as a mono amp, but that's just a guess.

Try Audiogon for used audio equipment. If you're in Canada, maybe CanuckAudioMart.com. If you're in the US, try USAudioMart.com.

Ah yes!  I read the listing incorrectly.  It's the 470-ST mono that I saw.  That would explain a lot.

Well, now that I have that squared away I would still like to pose the question - is the 4B-ST still the preferred choice or are the 470s a worthy consideration?

thanks

Hi Adam

The 470 is designed for 70 volt line applications - not for high quality audio.  Keep your eye out for a 4b SY or SST
