Survey: Single driver or multi way with crossover
« on: 21 Mar 2016, 05:59 pm »
A one week poll to see what our members are listening to.  Please vote to see results.

Realizing that volunteer polls are usually skewed, decided to also take another approach.  Using a middle letter of the alphabet, I looked at AC user info of members with 100 or more post.  Based on those with System info, the first 22 yielded 20 speakers with crossover, 2 without.  Electrostatics using a sub was decided to be w/crossover, those without were w/o crossover.

Should be interesting to see the results.

In years past my answer would have been different as I spent a long time with OB single drivers.

I have never heard a single driver speaker that I considered full range. I suppose it greatly depends on the type of music you enjoy.

20-20k Hz is a marketing ploy.  Decades ago 80 - 8000 Hz was considered full range by some.  Mike you're welcomed to stop by to hear my transmission line floor-standing speakers that use the "mighty" Fostex F200A driver (8" AlNiCo, rated raw at 30-20k Hz, 8 ohm, 90 dB/w/m).

S Clark, are there electrostatics that don't have separate sections for treble?  (Those must have some sort of crossover in them if you're keeping score.)

Not sure honestly.  I just started with the "N" and went til I got a 20 to something ratio... hardly scientific.  I ran into a couple of speakers that were hard to classify, so I just made a quick and dirty determination.  It's just a rough idea, sort of like a survey.

It'd be more interesting to see how many people have owned multiple examples of both types and see what they've ended up with.  I suspect the majority of people have never even owned a quality single driver speaker and I'd guess that many are listening to multi ways because that's all they know not necessarily because they like the sound better.

I have always been a fan of OHM loudspeakers, the original single driver version. The German Physiks loudspeakers are some of my favorite loudspeakers, period. The low crossover frequency into the bass drivers does not seem to do any damage and the overall coherence of the speakers presentation is very satisfying.
Of course they are out my price range.

Although I've never owned a single driver system, I've heard many of them.  They do what they do very well, not sure if they would work for me, but I'm intrigued.

I currently have both types of systems.

My main system, as S. Clark asked about, is multi-driver/multi-crossover, all OB GR-Research. The Wedgies, which handle midrange and treble, have 4 G-R Research LGK drivers handling the midrange and a BG Neo3PDR tweeter. Then this crosses to the G-R Research/Rythmik OB subs.

My office system has the single driver G-R Research LGK 1.0's without a sub. However, these are hardly full range since they roll off somewhere around 60Hz even though they sound fuller.

Both are fine systems for their respective purposes.

It seems that many of us have both types. Like JohnR, I use some single drivers in my HT (ZigmaHornets) and am quite pleased them.

I have both... a traditional 3-way tower speaker, an unconventional 3-way horn speaker that uses a single driver to cover 400-15000 Hz, and a pair of single drivers.

My current speakers Shelby+Kroll (soon to be for sale) are a full range single driver with a tweeter crossed in above hearing levels.
If I could swing them the full range single driver rear loaded horns by Charney Audio would be in my listening room. But since I'm losing my listening room, head phones will be my speakers of choice.

I went single driver / DHT amps years ago and never looked back. Correction: Not EXACTLY single driver - some speakers have super tweeters, others are hybrid open baffle.

I'd classify a full range w/ super tweeter as  multi w/ no crossover
