Refinish Side Rails
« on: 16 Mar 2016, 12:23 pm »
I have a pair of MMGs with black side rails. I was thinking of refinishing to a dark cherry or rosewood. Anyone have any experince getting rid of the black finish?

I'd assume that it's a latex stain on there(Magnepan would know)and the clear coat.
Actually menthyl hydrate takes off latex paint, which you could try to see if any comes off,if it does not, then you know for sure it's oil base.we use it all the time to see if paint is oil or latex.
A few swipes with that on a rag will let you know right away.
If oil it just stays shiny and nothing comes off.
Also perhaps a natural paint/stain remover would take the bulk off.
Then fine grit sandpapr to get in the grain, perhaps starting with 120 grit and going to 180 up to 320.
A petroleum based remover is nasty too work with.
Before all that make sure you MASK the whole panel off as no matter how careful you are it seems to places where you do not want it to go on.
A cabinet making company can help also.

Pull the trim pieces off before you do anything to them.

They come off pretty easy . Take your time with the prying and do the prying in small increments . It should not take much to sand off the paint with a power sander . I took mine off a pair of 1.6's once to paint white . Man if you had 1.6's i would trade you ... I want black instead of the cherry color .

Unless something has changed, with MMGs it's just take out 4 screws and they fall right off.
P.S.
There's your incentive to buy some 1.6s!

The rails are off and stripped. Will start sanding today. Found a Bombay Mahogany stain that I think will work but don't want them to turn out to red.

Firt application of color went fine, just hate the color. Looks like more sanding and another try.

Very nice result.  Always fun to customize a piece to your own satisfaction.  Nice stands too.

Now, don't move house or change the floors!

Thank you. Had some metal stands made up like my factory MGIII ones. Gets the speakers vertical and more toddler stable.
