I wasn't completely happy with the base I built for the Kaiju, so I built another one.  This time I built it using the Alder base that comes with the kit.  Instead of wrapping this one I painted it.  I am happier with this version.  I have some Sophia Royal Princess 300Bs that should be here tomorrow, I am anxious to hear them.  The amp is sounding great.  Here are a few pics for your amusement:

You won't like them, they have targets .  It is the GR Research "Wedgie" open baffle with dual 12" servo bass per side.

Ed,

You are my diy superstar :thumb:

What brand of carbon fiber veneer did you use? 3M Di-Noc? I'm looking into Dragon Plate myself.

Thanks,
Anand.

Thanks FRM, Jay, much appreciated, the amp is sounding fantastic.

Thanks Anand, that's high praise coming from a DIYer with your professional level skills.  The wrap isn't DiNoc, but it is 3M:

3M Scotchprint 1080 Carbon Fiber Vinyl Flex Wrap Black CF12

It wasn't bad to work with but unfortunately I cannot compare it to anything other than one other wrap I have used:

Arlon Ultimate PremiumPlus BRUSHED RED ALUMINUM Vinyl Car Wrap Film CWC-619BR

If pushed to compare I would say the 3M was a bit easier to work with of the two, however the projects were quite different and my learning curve was coming up each time I worked with it.  One interesting observation (to me anyway ) was that 3/4" is about as far as you can stretch it, past that and the color layer tears, followed closely by the base.  Of course someone with more experience or better technique might be able to improve on that but that was my limit in the driver cutouts.

Best,
Ed

Edit:  I just checked out the dragon plate product, very cool, I wasn't aware of that product.  I wonder how the corners are worked.

Yup, Dragon plate is expensive but might be the ticket. I used 3M Scotchprint here:

Have fun listening!

I remember seeing that project.  That along with the Vapor speaker that had a repair made using the carbon fiber wrap were instrumental in my decision to try it on a pair of speakers.  I like the final product so I am happy I did.

Well, I have been running the amp for a while so I decided to add the DC filament supply to allow me to try other tubes I have been considering.  I recieved the DC filament kit, it went together fantastically like all the Bottlehead kits do.  I powered it up for a few songs to make certain it was working correctly, total silence from my speakers, very nice.  With the Clarity 10uF MR caps it's getting pretty cozy in there:

I also recieved my tubes today, so I pulled the EH 300Bs, and put the new tubes in:

The infamous Elrog 300B, they are the best sounding tubes I have heard, and I have been listening to them for less that a hour.  Paul Joppa of BH says the Kaiju design parameters appear to be nearly ideal for this tube, so I'm hopeful I get reasonable mileage out of these.

Vocals are incredible, great presence helping make this the best amp I have heard.

Best,
Ed
