Building another Bottlehead

Kaiju this go around.  This is my first foray into 300B amps.  The build went well, great instructions from BH as always.  Still working on the base but got the amp up and running last night, here are a few pics:

Looks like a very nice clean build! I am interested how it compares to your Stereomour since I have built one myself.

Me too, my Stereomour is a really fantastic amp.  I commented in the Kaiju circle that I don't know how the Kaiju could sound better than my Stereomour.  If I could equal the sound of the Steromour and have just a smidge more headroom I will be happy.

That's pretty cool! What is that texturing treatment you did to the top plate?

Thanks for sharing, Ed.

That's The BH standard top plate treatment, I like it as well, I simply put a few coats of poly on it.

Again, cool.  Is it aluminum?  If so the poly will keep it shiny for years to come.

And your base, looks to be maple?

No, I'm going to try my hand at wrapping this one, the frame is mdf.

Cool stuff Ed.
Have you picked out a veneer  ? If you use  an iron on method either PVA or Heat Lock, be sure to use an iron that gets  hot enought to full re-activate the  adhesive.
Keep the pics coming   :thumb:

Thanks Jay.  I won't be veneering, I am going to try a vinyl wrap....I think.  I am putting primer on it now, it has me considering the meltacast red that I painted the transformer bell with. I have the wrap here, I will probably give it a shot , if I don't like it pull it off and paint or start over.  Rather than veneer I would probably just build out of hardwood.

My first attempt at a wrap job taught me quite a bit, for instance don't primer the day before and don't primer at all if you are going to use the 3m adhesive promoter.  When you do either or both of these things you stand a good chance of it peeling off and sticking to the vinyl adhesive.

I have enough vinyl to pull this off, sand, and try again.  I believe it will go better next time which will probably be this weekend.  Here are a couple of pics for your amusement.  You can get an idea of what I am going for:

Nice looking work Ed. Clean. Hope the re-wrap goes smoothly. Should make a nice match for the trans cover. Keep us posted.  8)

Thanks JD, I think it will assuming I get the primer off cleanly.

I posted this on the BH site....

I received my Clarity MRs and Jupiter Coppers today, unfortunately one of the leads on the coppers broke off before I could get a soldering iron on it.  I had a pair of Jupiter wax here, so I installed those in the copper's place.  I'm glad the BH team thought to give us extra space, the Clarity MRs 10uF are BIG.  One side it is closer quarters than the other due to the terminal strip on the "A" side next to the power transformer, I actually had to bend it over a bit and I put a strip of electrical tape on the back of it as a precaution.  The cap doesn't quite touch the electrolytic caps and large resistors.  I would caution those who are considering a different 10uF cap that may be larger, to make certain you leave additional lead length on the electrolytics that are supposed to ride above (below when the amp is in place) the large resistors.  This is due to the potential for the large cap pushing the electrolytic sideways enough to touch the resistor.  I had enough lead but not by much.  Here is a pic:

I finished my base, as finished as I am going to get it.  I learned more about wrapping this go around, I think one or two more tries and I could get it close to right.  This version is good, has a few flaws, but my execution and choices were much better this time, a pic for your amusement :

I cut out sockets in the feet for the Herbies tenderfeet to sit in, they hold the unit off the shelf about a quarter inch.

Yeah, that's lookin' mighty fine.  :thumb:  Bet it sounds great too.  Are you planning to make one of your curved top covers?

Haha...thanks Jake, I havent decided about the cover,  I have considered to curved  top but this unit is a departure from the Stereomour  as far as looks go, so I am likely looking at doing something different.

It is starting to settle in a bit and sounding pretty good, actually Im sitting here listening to BB and Eric on Riding With The King, they are sounding mighty fine.

I like it  Ed,  pretty  cool 8)  I imagine there are a  lot of little tricks to learn with regards to wrapping that material.

Great album   too  !!

Looking forward to seeing your new approach.  Frankly, I wouldn't want to cover up that power transformer!  It looks cool with the candy apple red bell and the Bottlehead logo.
