any suggestions on 845 tubes?
« on: 28 Oct 2004, 06:16 pm »
Hey all,
just wanted to know if anyone has rolled through the 845 tubes with much opinion. I know the copper base 845b from shugang/valve art is supposed to be nice. Any other low priced competitors?
thanks, beat

Before you blow a wad of cash on a mega buck 845 tube, you might do a little looky loo to see what people have to say about rolling SE amps like this.  Everything I have read and tried indicates that 90% of the rolling benefit is in the driver tube, not the output tube.  So it may be far cheaper to get some nice driver tubes instead.

that seems to be the concensus over at the tube asylum also. I'll definitely swap the 6sn7 around first.

I think I have some dozen pairs of 6sn7s I think.  Looking for anything in particular?  6sn7s are sweet tubes IMO.  Definitely where you are going to get the most bang for your buck probably.

Thanks Josh,
I was looking at some raytheon, sylvania, rca..It seems they can all be had for like 40 a pair in good shape or the supposed top of the list of the best americans 6sn7w for around 100. I am willing to drop like 50-75 or so on a bang for the buck safe bet. It seems alot of people like the chrome top sylvania...I dunno. What are your faves? I suppose I should say what are your faves in an SET?

I liked the new EH tubes about as well as any and considering the price, they're great.

I also like NOS GE 6SN7's...again they can be found for about $20/pair.

Caveat with any gear suggestions: what might work for my ear won't work for yours.  So try everything out.

For a while, the 6SN7 craze got way out of hand when people were charging $300 for a pair of "rare" VT231's or whatever.  Just crazy crap.

I was just up at Jim Fosgate's house a few weeks ago and he must have 10,000-20,000 NOS tubes...most of which are NIB.  I'm sure he has enough vintage 6SN7's to flood the market just on his own...Hmmmm maybe I should approach him about a little business deal where we could make MILLIONS of dollars off his NOS tubes.... :P
