Help with AV123 X-Ono crossover
« on: 5 Mar 2016, 03:16 pm »
I purchased a pair of the X-Ono to try omni-directional speakers again. My last omni's were a pair of Bose 901 series II that someone gave me over 30 years ago. With a sub and no equalizer they were okay.
These X-Omni are actually very good. Danny did an outstanding job designing these and AV123 built them well. I read out on all the feedback.
Added some poly fill to the bottom of the cabinet. Damped the port. Added some polyfill to the crossover chamber.
While in there I looked over the stock crossover. Very nice construction. Nice resistors, good looking coils, film caps with Sonicap bypasses.
Missed out on the Ninja crossovers. Thinking of changing the chokes. Does anyone know the factory values used? And a recommendation for types. I do not want the top dollar ones. These were 200.00 speakers.

I know upgrading the stock  poly caps to Sonicpas as well as swapping the resistors for Mils is  apopular upgrade in many of the other X series speakers ( I'd think the caps are going to be your biggest bang for buck but for the price of a few resistors, you may as well do them too while your in there). Not sure of the actual values used  in the Omni network, but  I'd  think it would be a relatively inexpensive upgrade. Might want to consider some no res for the cabinets as well

The easiest and most effective upgrade would be to replace the two tweeter caps with sonicaps.  The next best upgrade is to add a servo sub.  Also, don't forget they need a lot of space to sound their best.

Thanks for the suggestions

I can get the values for upgrade resistors and caps from the crossovers. Do not see marking for the chokes and not longer have an inductance meter.
Planned on getting the parts together before starting. Have tried two subs, a Blue Sky Sub 212 and a Finial S220. Crossed at 60 HZ with 18 dB/octave slope. Like the sub coming in low. Both are sealed and really help.
I could see Danny's signature on the stock crossover. No sand cast resistors in sight and Sonicap bypasses. Plus the chokes oriented to minimize cross coupling. Much better stock crossover than expected.
Sonically these are fine now. Rich, warm sound. Good resolution and localization. Been watching for a reasonable pair of Shahinians, Direct Acoustics, or even Duevel to pop up. Not sure they will out perform the X-Omni. With a good recording these are special.

I'm building a pair of X-Omnis and have done my usual X-Series crossover upgrade of Sonicaps, Mills resistors, Erse XQ inductors, Sonicap by-pass caps and point-to-point wireing everything (I don't use the stock PCB). Danny had all the parts and schematics for this upgrade.

What value chokes did you use?

By choke do you mean inductor?

You'd need to ask Danny about the actual value, I'm not sure if it is one he unwinds to get the value he wants or not.

The inductors are not too bad, but if you want to upgrade them I have the values.

The caps will be the biggest upgrade and most back for the buck. I have the Sonicaps in stock too.

And actually, upgrading the binding posts to tube connectors is the next biggest upgrade. it will clean them up across the board.
