Do you agree with these definitions?

I'm not always sure what people mean when they use certain terms to describe what they are hearing.
Hence a glossary of audio speak would be useful reference, especially when it comes to reviews.

What do you think?

I pretty much agreed with most of the definitions.  Not likely to be used as a reference for those who most need it, as is usually the case in these things.  Many of the definitions had references to the frequency range they were referring to, which was very helpful.

The definition of bass being 60 Hz to 250 Hz is not a useful one, IMO. To me, bass is about 16 to 150 Hz; lower midrange 150 to 500; midrange around 500-1k, upper midrange to perhaps 3.5k; treble above that.

For reference, the approx fundamental ranges of some acoustic instruments (from http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/music/orchins.html) are:

violin: 196 to 2600 Hz
cello: 65 to 660 Hz
bass: 41 to 247 Hz
and the fundamentals of the piccolo go up only to about 4kHz.

Didn't J. Gordon Holt print an audio glossary a long time ago? If I remember correctly it was informative and humorous, at least for an audiophile. It's still available, I believe, from Stereophile.

Holt's glossary can be found at:

If memory serves, there was also a print version, inexpensively priced.
