WHAT???!!! I'm still writing my articles on the RPi 2...

Cool  :thumb:

I don't see anything about the Ethernet bandwidth, that would be the single most significant upgrade to me (100M -> 1GBit)

It also seems that the Ethernet and USB are on the same bus so you have to deal with the contention.

It's not clear to me why that matters - ?

Anyway, I ordered one  :thumb:

Not too many changes but still amazed how much one get for such a small price. The internal wifi perhaps (and it's not shared with the ethernet/USB) and when the 64 bit software will be available it could improve DSP capability.

The Kodi hardware forum is a good place to get info how these type of boards work in real life for media applications http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=262206

Looks like the initial feedback is little bit faster.

Don't think the bus bottleneck  really matters unless one tries to run huge HD videos with multichannel high res audio output via a USB DAC.  Or for people that want to use it for NAS where high speed is important when moving files.

Thanks Odal3. I have just been writing up a little file/music server using the Pi2, hence my curiousity/interest in the faster network port. However the onboard Wifi is also interesting, for a client. I'm using audio output off the I2S so bus contention isn't an issue there either. Mine has shipped, I guess I will get it in a day or two.

Nice! Let us know how it goes. Which DAC are you using?

I'm super happy so far with my two RPI2 and use them for video (OSMC - Kodi), spotify (via shairport-sync) and local audio (mpd) and it even let me do some active cross over and DSP (ecasound). Moode is also great.

For a true file server (NAS), check out the free openmediavault distribution especially if you have two boards with one as the server and the other as the client. I believe they have premade images for RPI. But perhaps even better as server would be one of the odroid boards (priced similarly) wich has faster network port and some varients even including a SATA bridge.

Hi again, I'm using a HifiBerry DIGI+.

I tried Open Media Vault but felt it was overkill for this purpose. I needed to use the command line to install minimserver anyway, so for the article I felt it better to do a simple command-line based setup on Raspbian Jessie Lite. I did try an Odroid XU4 too :) Faster although not as fast as exoected (for a NAS) but the fan is really annoying so I didn't pursue it further at this point. But perhaps for a dedicated little NAS I'll give it and OMV another try sometime with that cloudshell they have.

How did you get the extra output channels for an active crossover to work? I've not been able to get a multichannel USB DAC work with the RPi (works for stereo, not multi), some Googling suggested to me that maybe it's because ALSA only supports stereo?

That's exciting let us know how it goes. I hear you regarding using these type of board for full nas and server duties if it is only music you want.  I'm running my openmediavault on one of the smaller Lenovo tower servers (ts140) and I couldn't be happier since it can do all my audio and video servers and other things at the same time. I got it in another room but it's surprisingly silent.

Anyways, back to your question. I use ecasound to process the crossovers. I have a multichannel USB dac so I set it up with alsa so each channel gets its own output. I pipe the audio from mdp to ecasound that sends the outputs to the alsa device of my dac.

You can also output it via spdif and HDMI (haven't tried the HDMI yet and believe it requires MPlayer and some tricks from Kodi).

I havent found a good multichannel DAC yet that is not too expensive. I'm currently using an Asus U7 which is just OK.

See here for Richard Taylor's writeup: http://rtaylor.sites.tru.ca/2013/06/25/digital-crossovereq-with-open-source-software-howto/
(There are a lot of other good stuff on that blog as well)

And Charlie Laub added some more functionality with some additional filters and a great excel tool to configure the filters:
http://audio.claub.net/ACD-plugins.html

Excel tool: http://audio.claub.net/software/ACD/ACD.html

Charlie also has a long thread discussing a lot of different implementation options using VLC and other methods in a different forum.

The results are really good and I am amazed by what can be done with the little RPI.

Happy reading

Cool, thanks for the info :)

Back on RPi3, for some reason I had the impression that images built for RPi2 would work with RPi3. That is not the case. So unless your favorite image has been freshly made to support Rpi3 (or you're keen on building the kernel yourself) there's no rush to get one  Raspbian Jessie lite works, but volumio and Moode don't (that I've tried so far).

Raspbian Jessie lite works

Raspbian Jessie desktop works too.

Don't know what to do with it, but web browsing seems zippy enough.

There is a method explained on the diyaudio thread how to get Moode working with the RPI3.

Hey John
So I have a 3 in the mail right now, they were out of stock over here for a bit, but are now available from mcm.

In the meantime, I've been playing with an old Pi, I think its a model b.  I have the full version of Jessie installed with some other stuff.

I was hoping to run that image on the 3, after running an update.  That's based on info I read on the net (they don't lie on the net )

So is that not true?  Do I have to start all over from a fresh Jessie image?

Its not that big a deal for me, was just hoping to save an hour or so of installing stuff.

The raspberry pi is on my radar; it seems to do everything a lot of streaming/server setups do- at a fraction of the cost.

Apparently apps like Volumio (and probably others mentioned above) have to be recompiled for the new processor. I've looked into Volumio a bit; it seems to do what I want, which is play music stored on a local HD and feed it to an external DAC, controlled from my iPhone.

The "Hi Fi Berry" website says the Raspberry Pi 2 is fine for just such a use and that the 3 wouldn't be required, so you may be able to get an even Cheaper and Cheerfuller deal on a 2 if that's what you have in mind.

I really don't know :) Could be that apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade will work?

The method in the thread suggested by Odal3 (sorry, didn't keep the link) is to copy the whole kernel from the latest Jessie image to your (older) card.
