Computing and emf
« on: 29 Feb 2016, 07:37 pm »
HI my names Mike and I live in Southern Oregon. Been working with computers over 25 years and never been bothered much by emf. Just moved into a new place. The small bedroom has my desktop, cable modem, router, and WiFi. I turn the WiFi off most of the time, but I bought one of those buzz sticks to hunt down the worst offenders. My desktop computer is fairly new and doesn't seem to emit that much emf, but the power cord in back is a night mare. Do they sell shielded power cords for desktops? I've got a body voltage meter coming in the mail - maybe today. With that I'll be able to check how much it is actually affecting me. This is an Audio group I know, but Audio geeks know about emf too. Anyone out there got any tips? :D

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

Welcome Mike :thumb:
EMF from cords and amps are minimum.
I would be worried about WIFI though.

You're right, although the majority of computer power cords are grounded, they are usually not shielded.

Does your computer use a standard IEC power cord?  If so, generic shielded IEC power cords are available from a few dollars on eBay up to whatever you want to spend for "audiophile" IEC shielded power cords.

Welcome Mike.

I've found proper cable routing to be essential. Also, separate surge suppression/PLC for audio/video components.

Hello, Mike.

How far south - Grants Pass? I'm (normally) in Corvallis, but I'm overseas now. There are several of us Oregonians here.

Welcome to AC.

Computer cords are crap. Find a cable that has turns in it where the hot and neutral are twisted. Braided is an ok word too. That and a shield would be good.

That or make one.

Hello Mike,
You can spend serious money on cables, so better to look to one of the 'science based' companies for great quality affordable solutions.

I can recommend The Missing Link as someone you can trust: http://www.missinglinkcables.co.uk/#!missing-link-power-cable/b3p6c
"Available in all popular termination options for the UK, European and American market."

They also make pretty awesome speaker cables too (from what I've heard)

good luck Mike, let us know how things go
