Thorens TD150

New to the Circle as of Today! I am very excited about my newest purchase; A Thorens TD150. The store I bought it from gives it a 90 day guarantee. I believe it is the Mk I, as the original tonearm has no anti skate feature. I was told that the bearing was cleaned and new "grease" was installed along with a new belt. I was a little surprised about the grease though. I figured that a turntable of this vintage would use oil for the bearing lubrication. It is in pretty good condition. Some minor cosmetic stuff but nothing serious. I would, eventually, like to upgrade the tonearm to a Jelco or an SME but am open to other suggestions. It did not come with a cartridge. I would like to get it up and running with the existing tonearm though. I have not listened to vinyl since I was in college (1981), and , as you can imagine, I have some sense of urgency about getting it up and running. Hee. hee. After doing some research online, It seems that Audio Technica, Nagaoka, and possibly Shelter cartridges might be a good match. Do I need a low or high compliance cartridge for this arm? Any help would be most welcome. I also read someplace that the lack of anti skate on the arm can prove to be destructive to LP's , that it can put undo wear on them. True? Would a Denon DL103 work with this arm?

I believe you need a high compliance moving-magnet cartridge.

A Denon 103 has one of the lowest compliances out there and will probably not be a good match for the Thorens.  A Shelter has a compliance in the lowish range, and may also not be a good match.

Welcome to Audio Circle! I'll admit that I don't know anything about the 150, but I took a quick look at the manual which is available at Vinyl Engine.com (you'll have register for a free peek).  The manual states that there is indeed oil required for the bearing. I'm pretty sure that whatever oil is recommended has long since fallen by the wayside. I'm using Mobil 1 full synthetic (5w-30) in my TD-146. The Audio Technica cartridges should be a safe bet, but the Nagaokas would probably work better. The Shelters, unless I'm mistaken, are low compliance and probably not a good fit for your table. Hopefully some of our more experienced members will come in soon!
I hope this is enough to get you started.

Oh, I believe the Denon is also low compliance or lower compliance.
