Headphone recommendations?
« on: 23 Feb 2016, 09:39 pm »
Just got out of some Beyerdynamic 990 pro 250 ohms.
Looking at the Fostex t50rp's with mod kit.
Thoughts?
Opinions on something better, or cheaper?
Amp choices?

You should head over to the headphone circle...I'm sure we can help you out with some recommendations.

My recommendation would be the Sennheiser Orpheus.

On a more serious note....

A little specificity will help recommendations. What type of music do you like? Do you want open or sealed? What did you like (or not) about the Beyers? Target price range you have in mind? Type of sound signature you generally favor? (Maybe some speakers you like?) Sometingto give us some ideas.

There is always something better, as well as something cheaper.

ajzepp is right, maybe this thread might be moved?

Be prepared for

Don't worry about it! Put in a request to have the thread moved to the Headphone Circle if you like, give us a little more info, and you'll have lots of suggestions. Hope we can be of help.

Do you want to break the news to him that he gets a "-5" for posting in the wrong forum, or should I?

It's not necessarily the wrong circle, he is asking for cheap headphones, which fit under C&C guidelines.  However if the OP asks for it to be moved, I'll happily oblige.

My go to cheap and cheerful headphone is the JVC HARX 900 at $60 on Amazon and elsewhere.  Stunning soundstage with excellent sound quality for the price.

Regardless of which forum his advice comes from, I imagine the headphone crowd around here can assist.

I note that both the Beyers you had, and the ~$100 Fostex you reference are open/semi open phones.

Should we assume that is what you specifically want, vs a closed set?

Musical preferences?
Issues that the DT990's had that drove you to move on?

went back to my grado s80's with g cush pads
The problem, actually I had no problem with the beyers, is that I used an O2 amp and it was wonderful.
But I had to grab the amp, hope it ws charged, get the dac, grab a cable.
In hindsight I hate to say it was too much work, but I grab the grado's, plug into ipad, iphone et and listen to tidal immediately with pretty darn good results.
As for listening choices, too many different genres to list. No rap, otherwise most everything audiophile related.
Thanks for the feedback and this post should definitely be allowed in Cheap and Cheerful! Isn't that what this forum is for?
Just my $.02.

Try to ignore our half hearted abuse, we are just messing around having fun.  You can absolutely post here, so long as the $ limits are respected, and you certainly appear to be operating well within them from my perspective.

I owned the SR60i and heavily modded them - removed the white layer, holes punched in the back side of the driver, built my own rosewood cups - there is a thread around here somewhere about what a couple of us did a few years ago.  I had the chance to compare them to some very high end Grado's at a local Head-Fi meet and a few preferred the modded 60's.

I am currently enjoying the Senn HD598's I traded an amp for.  They can be found around $100 used for sure.

Sitting here listening to Donald Fagan on my Fostex RP50, which I modded a bit.  Bass is clean, punchy and fast, mids are smooth.  Sometimes I think I'd like a bit more high end but sometimes not, so it may just be the source material.  I also have Audio Technica AD700 and AD900X.  They are open and airy, but even though the balance is more toward the high side, I don't think they are as smooth in the mids as the Fostex.  The new Mark III version of the Fostex, may be all you want, with no mods, though I haven't heard them.

Modding Fostex can be entertaining.  But you are going to need an amp.

t50rp's probably would need an amp, I doubt they would sound good straight from an iphone.

Have you considered IEMs?

These days, you can get lots of cheap, relatively nice sounding IEMs.

With budget stuff, there are tradeoffs, so you need to find the ones with the strengths that matter to you.

The Senn HD598's were my favorite for a quite awhile and the second most comfortable headphone I have used until I got a pair of HD700's for Christmas last year. Now my grandson is enjoying the HD598's.

$100 is fantastic for the HD598's. When I bought mine they cost $350.

I've had the Senn HD280 Pro for nearly a decade and recently switched to the HD598 when they dropped under $100 briefly. Then when the HD598SE came out for $99, I bought those, too! Now I'm gifting the HD280 to my daughter for her mixing work.

The HD598SE comes in all-black with an extra short cord terminated in a mini-plug. My new go-to phones for my iPod Classic.

I owned the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO and they do sound pretty good, and as an over-the-ear phone have very high passive noise attenuation.  They were also the most uncomfortable headphones I've experienced, unless you somehow like that head-in-a-vise feeling.  ;)

I have a pair of Alessandro MS1s that I love. Cousins of Grados.
