Cambridge CXN streamer/ DAC. Any impressions?
« on: 22 Feb 2016, 10:44 pm »
Apart from some very good reviews on What Hifi, not so much info on this product to go by.. Wondering if it will be a real sonic upgrade to my squeezebox touch which still sounds pretty good whether solo or paired with an external DAC.
Anyhow given that the Cambridge CXN can function as a streamer with upsampling capability as well as a DAC with dual Wolfson WM8740 chips for my various other components- it looks interesting.

any impressions welcome though.

Like wise the Pioneer N-50A or N70A..
thanks

To answer my own question.. I bought the Cambridge CXN DAC-network player. It sounds fantastic and is a great one box solution to replacing the squeezebox touch as well as serving as a capable DAC for other components.

Having said that I think the SBT, for the price,  is without doubt the most overachieving little component I have ever owned!

Hello, Tom.

I missed your first post on this. I'm not familiar with this model, but there was something like it a couple years ago - I think. Anyway, I'm glad you like.

Do me a favor and come back to this thread once you've had it for a while. Does its SQ improve after approx. 200 hours? Do you leave it always on for better sound? Are there any drawbacks that you notice?

Thanks,

Michael

I have the Cambridge stream magic 6. It is the older model model of your CXN. I use it as a dac for my squeezebox3
As you say it works great!!!. The only thing I don't like about it is when I use it as a  computer music server and create a playlist.
When I turn it off I loose the playlist. Don't loose the playlist on the squeezebox3 when I turn it off.

                                                                     Cheers

I haven't noticed a kind of burn in factor but any noticeable changes I will post..
The app has a couple of glitches and flaws and as yet the app does not permit scanning a track, it just goes to the next track. Cambridge inform me they are working on a fix.
But overall I think it there's a good balance of useability and SQ. What Hifi gave it network player of the year for what it's worth.

I found a sort of work around but I agree the SBT is much better with playlists. WHat I do on a Mac is to use VLc to create a m3u playlist. Then I put the playlist in a folder in the hard drive where the music is stored and the CXN reads it.
But yes if you create a playlist on the go using the CXN, it does not save it.
