I think we have more reviewers today than actual manufacturing entities?

Mike

You hit the nail on the head with that one! I like Stereophile and AS for their pictures but have found little consistent correlation with ANY specific mag or reviewer for what I like and don't like. I think it is worth reading a bunch of reviews in your early audio head days to learn the terminology and get a feel for what to listen for. Then let your own brain and ears be your guide.

I agree that Hi Fi + from England is one of my faves, but I sample Hi Fi News and Hi Fi Choice too.

A little magazine called UHF from Canada is good- and Inner Ear Report.

But there are so many choices online, Positive Feedback, 6 Moons, Enjoy the Music, SoundStage- it makes going to the news-stand almost obsolete.

BTW, I've long been on-the-fence about STEREOPHILE, but I do NOT like the recent redesign. The format really gets in the way- the layout doesn't look like "an audio magazine."

My all-time favorite was Audio, which sadly no longer exists.  My favorite magazine now is The Absolute Sound, and I like the English mag What Hi-Fi? too, although I only read it occasionally.  Stereophile- well, they've gotten a little too flakey for me so I didn't renew my subscription.  They devote way too much space to cables & vinyl for my tastes, and I'm sick of all the $25,000 components they claim are "bargains."  The whole rag reads like an ad.

I agree with previous comments abou HiFi+. It is a very well designed, finished and considered publication. I like HiFiWOrld which tends to deal with a lot more reasonably priced products plus an interesting DIY section. HiFiNews is one I read most often and enjoy - except for Ken Kessler. I find him infuriating as he's glowing in his reports of equipment and when I buy/audition them turn out to be very mediocre.

Ahh, where is "Listener" when you need it! Sadly, most mags don't give unfavourable reviews to products that advertise therein, and a good number of reviewers tend to pontificate, and follow the general herd. (sigh!)

Just a small footnote to this thread. Most of the 'zine's mentioned in this thread are available on the racks in Tower Record stores....at least in NY & L.I.. Might check the Tower store by where you live. 8)

Yeah 'wolf, ALL are available in Chapters in the area I live, so I read many, but only buy the HiFi+.

The UHF is a good mag too, but I find it harder to find - must be because it is a Canadian mag...

I have to say, there were suprisingly more responses than I originally anticipated.  Thanks to everyone for their input, suggestions, and insight.  I am still in the process of evaluating them all but I can say that at least a few of those recommended here look pretty good to me and I will be ordering soon.

While looking around online I came across a pretty useful reference page that purports itself to be "The Catalog of All Known High-End Audio Magazines on the Web"

I found it to be an excellent tool for anyone trying to decide on a magazine or just as a general reference tool.  Definitely worth a looky.

The link is here: http://www.audiofederation.com/catalog/magazines/

Thanks again to everyone for their responses.

Hello, Jayman,

Thanks so much for The Audio Federation list. It's everything you said it was and I bookmarked it. That will give any audiophile lots of reading- and fun.

I'm happy that our suggestions were useful. :D

Round Earth?  You mean non-Linn/NAIM?

While Linn, Exposure, Rega, Naim, Neat sort of typify flat earth and PRAT, these aren't the only brands that can carry a tune obviously.  My problem with TAS is they make very little mention of emotional engagement or musicality and instead focus on BS minutia like this: (which I'm quoting from the Gallo Reference 3 review) "As the track unfolds, the Gallos give you the uncanny sense that Passos and Carter are actually present in your room, so that you hear Passos tilting her head slightly to emphasize phrases"

This is the type of stupid minutia that, for me, has nothing to do with musical intention and everything to do with sonics/spatial BS effects.  This is round earth to a quasi flat earther like myself and I think it's stupid, though I know many that get a hard on to be able to, oh my god, hear that Passos head is, OH MY GOD, 3 degrees more to the left than they actually thought.  To those that get into this, let's not have lunch.

But what if Pork is on the menu and they are paying? Is the earth "round" then...if but for a fleeting culinary moment?

I may accept that the earth is round, IF someone is buying me PORK BBQ and doesn't speak to me about audio.
