Introduction with a question
« on: 16 Feb 2016, 08:24 pm »
Hi everyone,

This seems like a great community where I know ill be able to get some great ideas / advice from as I search for my perfect setup.

I've been into audio my whole life starting with car and boat installations then got into fine audio in college with a pair of gold Grado 325i headphones with a CMOY amp that I built. Since I gave gotten ahold off a set of VMPS Supertower/R that I drive with a Yamaha CA2010 which makes a great sound and has a huge presence in the room.

There is however a problem, both of the 10" drivers have failed and I haven been able to find an exact replacement (they have a small piece of pine extruding from where the cap should be).  Repair would be an option but the previous owner had already replaced one of the 10" woofers.  I know I could replace the woffers with a similar model but from what I've seen this set is only worth about $500 if I can find a buyer (Houston) and a set of good replacements would be over half the value of the set. This coupled with the fact that my next living arrangement won't allow for such massive speakers has got me considering a change.

The idea is to scavenge the drivers off the set to build two smaller towers consisting of two 4" drivers and three tweeters then relying on a separate sub.

I would also like to sell the two 15" woffers and passive woofers which are in great shape as well as the box if anyone would be interested in them.

I came here to to ask the community if this is a good idea or if I would just be ruining an iconic set of speakers when there are other options available.

Thank you,

Daniel

After a few posts you'll be enabled to private message within Audio Circle.  Then contact John Casler (big VMPS fan/former dealer/current NuPrime dealer) who regularly surfs Audio Circle.  Very supportive guy.
