Stop TV Turning Off When Switching Receiver Input - Pioneer VSX-01

I have a Pioneer VSX-01 that I run a Comcast box and Apple TV box into via HDMI.  I then go HDMI out to my Samsung 58" TV.  The problem is that when I switch to my Squeezebox (RCA in) from one of these HDMI sources it turns off the TV.  How do I prevent this from happening?  I would like to have the TV remain on even though I am listening to music.

I have read the manual as much as I can and tried as many configurations as possible but nothing seems to correct this issue.

I hope you guys can help out this simpleton!

Cheers,
James

Well I can only think of 2 things that may help you.

1 is turn off the hdmi control. I forgot the name but it's in the tv menu.

2 the other is to bypass the receiver . Take the optical or coaxial out of the cable box and connect to the receiver and take hdmi and go direct to tv.

Hope this helps.

Does the TV actually power off or is it just the screen that turns black because of no input? If the latter are there options in the receiver setup menu to configure an input (we'll call it input 1) to be video from source A and audio from source B? I did something similar a few years back - cable TV on display (no audio) while playing music.

I agree with gregcss but also had another question.  What remote are you using?  Something like a Harmony or other programmable remotes may turn off the TV when switching to a purely audio source.

I believe the problem is thru the receivers control menu, where it internally plays "traffic cap" with any source thats run thru it. I'm pretty sure that there is a toggle in the menu that simply needs to be turned off (something like automatic source control). I have seen this with other receivers.

That may be true but if he wants to see a picture when listening then I believe he will need to do I what I was saying. If you change the input and there is no video source the no picture. Another way would be use the component out of the cable box  video only and take the audio source he wants to listen to and make a new input. Like bluyray or Sat and do it that way.  If you want the tv just to stay on with black in the monitor I am sure there is a setting there like everyone is saying to just keep it on with no video input.

Also what r the model numbers of the equipment you are using? Maybe that will help us help you.

Sorry I see u posted the equipment but not the model of the tv just that it is a 58 inch. May bad.

Sorry, I wrote the wrong thing as it actually just goes to a black main screen and with a blue dialog box that says "searching for signals" and sometimes it says "weak or no signal".

I have previously used Optical out going to a receiver and HDMI out to the TV but that was on a receiver that did not have HDMI input.  I do not see the benefit of not using HDMI since I have it on this unit.

I have looked at the manual and cannot find anywhere that it shows how to get the proper settings.  I have tried all the ones I can find.

The TV is a Samsung FP-T5884.

Thanks!!

what model ATV are you using?  ATV 4 has a function in the Settings section that allows control of other devices. You may want to find that and see if its turned off.

The remote I am using is the one supplied with the Pioneer VSX-01 Receiver.

What is an "ATV"?

Sorry. ATV was my shorthand for Apple TV

cloudbaseracer

I think it is 2nd Generation.  The issue happens when switching from Cable HDMI (cable box) to CD input (Squeezebox).  It is not exclusive to Apple TV nor does it act any differently with it.

tvyankee

Did you turn off the hdmi control in both the avr and tv ?

I have turned off HDMI in both devices as far as I can tell.  It is hard to find the exact location within the receiver but I have been through every single menu and sub menu numerous times.

Looks like pages 67 and 68 in this link describe how to use HDMI control and the relevant settings.

That said I still have issues with this with my Logitech remote and Pioneer receiver and Panny plasma.  The Logitech (the hub model) turns everything on just fine.  But shuts off everything BUT the TV.

Had the same issue with a buddy's setup with a Marantz AVR and Samsung TV.  Weird.

Sorry guys, I just can't figure this thing out.  I have read the manual many times but it just does not work for me.

I have a Pioneer receiver with a Harmony remote (and I have multiple systems and multiple Harmony remotes) and the Pioneer is just weird.  It is in my bedroom system.  If I power stuff on, regardless of the the activity button I press, it comes on with the last source selected.  It's not a biggie as I just hit help.  I have other brands of receivers in other systems and none of them do that.

I am not using any other remote than the standard one that came with it.  I can't image that they turn off the tv every time an input is switched?

If you hit system setup, then other setup, then HDMI setup - what are your settings?
