JA Michell technoweight question??
« on: 4 Feb 2016, 04:25 pm »
Looking for the thread size and pitch for the adjustment knob on the back of a JA Michell counter weight assembly. I have tried the following thread sizes with no luck...

5/16-18
5/16-24
M8-1.0
M8-1.25

I have searched for drawings or illustrations with dimensions as well. Nothing. If anyone has the facts, please let me know.

Hi,
Someone using one of these is not likely to know about the thread.  Did you try here?

Thanks Neo,

I searched thru that site but did not attempt to contact them directly. I assume it will be ignored but I will reply if I get an answer.

I assume it's a smallish part, right?

If so, just put it in your pocket, goto the loose hardware section of your local Lowes / Home Depot /  Ace Hardware, and find the correct nut  (or bolt?) that screws onto it.  Or use one of the measuring devices that are always by the drawers.  You will then have your size.

Did that before starting the thread. It seems to be some bastard size pitch. It is an adjustment knob, so fine pitch is almost understood, but it doesn't fit industry standards.

Hmmmmmm.....

Your best bet is to keep pestering the mfr.  If no luck, maybe a local tool and die maker, or machinist shop?   They can measure it for you.

Might try these two:

The Needle Doctor

Galen Carol Audio

Both very knowledgeable, and carry Michell 'tables.

Cheers,

Mark

I did get a reply from Steve Rowland at J A Michell Engineering. Although he did not specify a thread size and pitch, he did recall the thread was a double-start. And that it is not recommended to hang weight on the extreme end of the arm. He also suggested buying an extra-heavy weight from their US distributor. For now, I just bored a slightly larger hole in my weight. Not perfect but it will get me the correct weight needed for an aluminum body, Denon cartridge.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
