Last year I invested in a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 2's & a NAD T748 surround receiver, planning to complete a mini home theater set up. However, I've found myself spending most of my time just listening to music. (Perhaps because in contrast to my youth, I'm rarely inspired to stay out way too late at loud live shows & night clubs). But although it can be almost startlingly accurate (to me & my limited experience), it lacks soul.
Back in the 90s, I had a much-loved system of Castle stand mounts with a NAD stereo receiver, CD & tape player (it was the dark age of vinyl, remember), that--although in retrospect, may have been a bit too warm, without much bass--played MUSIC that moved me. Unfortunately, after many rough moves, the electronics died one by one & I ended up donating the speakers to a less transient friend.
Before that my only exposure to 'hi-fi' was occasional family get-togethers in the 80s at a second uncle's who had Bose 901's and a first generation CD-player. Still, the difference between that and all the boomboxes & elevator music that surrounded me made a huge impression on my young mind & is, I suppose, what has, eventually, led me here,
