SP2 to SP3 upgrade?
« on: 25 Jan 2016, 03:01 pm »
Hey Gang,

I'm sure it is buried somewhere on this forum, but I can't find it... is there an upgrade path from the SP2 to the SP3 offered by Bryston?

Hi

No official path any longer but initially in the first year we did allow for trade-ins - I believe it was $1500 towards the price of the SP-3.

Thanks James.

Presumably there is no way to upgrade the SP2 for the lossless codecs? I'm guessing the only way is to pass analog channels from the transport to the SP2 and use the analog by-pass.

The SP 2 or 1.7 (like I used to have) do sound excellent using the multi-channel analog ins though.

I just did some A to B using the analog ins versus Optical-in which reverts the lossless signal back to lossy, and I must say, the analog ins sound very nice. Feeding the SP2 with an Oppo transport which can configure the speaker size, distance and level just like the SP2. Will do some more listening to see if the analog stage on the Oppo out-weighs the lossy output via optical to the digital stage of the SP2.

No sorry you need HDMI for the lossless codecs.

I used my one of my Oppo players with the SP1.7 analog ins for a few years.

And, what did you conclude? Did you like the Oppo analog outs?

It was excellent for audio from Blu-Rays.  It never was an issue for me for a sync/timing issue between the HDMI video and analog audio but I have read of people using the analog outs of Blu-Ray players with certain equipment and having those issues.

The SP3 doesn't have the latest surround formats (Dolby Atmos or DTS: X).  In order to get those one would need a processor to take the bitstream from the Oppo and process it.

I care zilch about Dolby Atmos and DTS: X - fast forward 50 years and home theatres will need 80 speakers at this rate! LOL

Mostly want to tap the previous generation lossless codecs.

Well then it just be perfect for you and hi-rez PCM from Blu-Ray sounds great.  I have not looked at any bass management in the Oppo as when I used it I had 4 Rel subs (using the high/speaker level connections) in the system, stereo subs for the front channels (Thiel 3.7s crossed over at 22Hz), a sub for the center channel and one for the rears).  So everything for me was defined as full range.

Sounded great in my system with either music or surround sound from Blu-Rays.
