Wheels under Audio Rack w/ TT
« on: 25 Jan 2016, 08:44 am »
Is it ok to get wheels under my new Audio Rack that includes a turntable?

Will wheels mess things up when I am using my Turntable?

Wheels would be helpful when I need to get behind my Rack to make changes to my components.

thanks

Wheels may workout ok, but I would use Herbies Glider series that will help isolate your rack. http://herbiesaudiolab.net/spkrfeet.htm Probably not too much more than wheels and much less work.

   + 1 for gliders.

IMO, no ………. I want my TT anchored and directly coupled (as best as possible) to the floor (concrete below the carpeting). ANYTHING that promotes ease of movement is not a good thing.

It depends...In my case I'm working with an SL1200 with stock feet.  It sits in a composite rack which sits on carpet.  Therefore it is not directly coupled to the floor which is 2x4 with plywood underlayment.  The rack does NOT sit between the speakers but is on the other side of the room, 20' away.  I don't believe for a moment that putting wheels on my rack will make any noticeable negative impact on the sound quality.

It all depends on your room setup, what you put the turntable on, it's footers & suspension, etc...

I have three TTs atop a salamander rack that is on casters for easy moving. This rests on the concrete basement slab in my home. No problems or worries.  With the entire rack loaded it's pretty heavy.

I think the casters are worth a try.  I have tried my system both ways; the casters are more efficient and my system sounds no different.

PS- some of the casters lock so there's no chance of the rack moving inadvertently.

Cheers,

Mark

It depends on the rack, but having a TT on a rack is usually not a good idea.

They're unstable - wobble, and having wheels can make it worse, although it depends on the individual situation.

If you are sourcing your own wheels, get the heaviest duty wheels you can find.  I have 2 old CWD racks in my basement that I use to store records and magazines with a TV on top of one of them.  The original casters / wheels collapsed years ago.  This summer I built a new reinforcing bottom plate and added 150lb casters, sourced from Lowes.  These are built like a tank, and don't wobble.  They are also large enough that they'll roll over anything.

If that doesn't resolve your wobble concerns, then mount a set of spikes next to the wheels and lock them down when you aren't moving the rack.

Often it's the rack itself that's unstable, depends on the rack.

One of the biggest problems with initial set up is the table support or supporting structure.
