Best recordings
« on: 8 Jan 2016, 05:53 pm »
Hello friends,

We are looking for some new recordings for our 2016 show tour.  I would love to get your input on what you feel are some of the best recording you have heard old or new(all).  I'm looking for the "WOW FACTOR".  So I want to know what your favorites are.  Can be digital, vinyl, or tape  (
not cassette or 8-track lol )

As I've not been to a high end show and am not sure what is "appropriate" .  I'm sure I'll be shunned for my input but here it is.

The Sound of Silence - Disturbed (I defy even the stuffiest audiophile not to get goosebumps from this new recording played on a high end system.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4
Tuesday's Gone - Metallica - Garage Inc.
The Guitar - Guy Clark
Civil War - Guns n Roses (Vinyl preferably)

I watch all of the AVShowrooms and honestly I've heard enough Anne Bison and Peruvian Pan flute. Maybe save these for the next Rocky Mountain Show as my brother and I will both be attending.  I've been loving my Uni 2's guys, keep up the great work, and all the best for 2016!

Maybe you can twist my arm into some vr-55's when I make it down :thumb:

Gavin,

Love your list! I've got too many to list, lol. Although would love to hear those cannon shots from the 1812! Hope the Capital Audio Fest is on!

All,

Now that I think about it, listening to Roxy Music's Avalon in its entirety would be a good one!

So many choices. Depends a lot on the genre. Here are a couple of obscure chamber music CDs:

Toccata by the Melbourne Guitar Quartet
Art of the Fugue by the New Century Saxophone Quartet

and, of course
Reference Recording of Copland Fanfare for the Common Man

Folsom

The Downward Spiral - NIN, SACD/Vinyl (Industrial electronica at Mozart level composure)

Illinois - Sufjan Stevens (this will destroy a system that has problems like room reflections)

Last Resort - Trentmoller (if track 10 doesn't make you say, "SICK, this is ***ing SICK!" your stereo's broke)

MTV Unplugged - Nirvana (for a great live experience, last 4 tracks should stand neck hairs)

Hold On Little Tomato - Pink Martini (good vocal dynamics and presence, large band)

Pure Heroine - Lorde

I don't judge systems much based on slow and easy stuff, because my laptop speakers can make that sound good. Not all of these are some crazy quality, but they have things I look for that seperate stereos.

Houses from Judy Collins - Judith. The violas will raise goosebumps on your arms.

Note: LP, the cd doesn't come close.

Two relatively unknown (at least in the US) labels - almost any title is worthwhile (although I am not sure how you define the "WOW" factor): AliaVox and Alpha.

Hi Leif,

Roy here from the UK.
If I may, I'd like to add a couple of suggestions to the list. Both great pieces of music and both high quality recordings (IMHO).

1.   She – by James Newton Howard and Friends.  -  Recorded by shefield labs here in the UK I believe.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM2NV59K6fo

2.   Adagio in G Minor – By Gary Karr  -  Superb piece featuring church organ,  and should admirably demonstrate the bass qualities of any loudspeaker.

Hope you find them enjoyable.

Kind regards
Roy.

Here's some WOW factor for you . . "Sound Roots" from the Mapleshade label.  No compression here!  It's a jazz quintet and the sound is stunning.  You must order direct from their website.  You may find that the WOW factor extends to the music, too.  Bet you get asked questions.

Ani DiFranco's Up, up, up, up, up is uncompressed, also.  Says she recorded this in her studio.  Sounds more like a warehouse the sound field is so big.  These are both disc's, btw.

..agree that it's a great recording but it was played to death at previous shows.  Reminds me of a sign I saw at The Guitar Center: NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
