Don't know a lot about him but he did advocate for the music of Frank Zappa, which makes him a good guy in my book.

Great contemporary composer. Possibly a bit under appreciated.
Not under appreciated at all for his conducting, however. He was brilliant.
As a fan of Zappa, I also appreciate his being an advocate for Zappa's classical music. But more importantly, he was a
great conductor and advocate of modernism in general.
As much as I like Zappa's classical music, there were better and more important 20th century and contemporary composers that Boulez conducted.
A real loss for us fans of 20th century and contemporary classical.

Wow! I hadn't heard of this just now.
We've lost too many great ones lately.

There they go ... Xenakis, Ligeti, Feldman, Cage, Henze, Berio, Nono, Kagel, Lutoslawski, Carter - who's left?
George Crumb ... not many others from that generation. Sad, this passing of time.
