The New JBL 4367 Could Be My Next Speaker
« on: 2 Jan 2016, 04:41 am »
JBL debuted the new 4367 at CEDIA 2015, a home speaker with the JBL pro drivers.  It's a passive speaker based off the M2 Master Reference Studio Monitor.  Our local JBL Synthesis dealer brought a set in that I got to listen to in my system over the holidays.

The 4367 is a revealing and dynamic sounding speaker, a realism like being at the performance.  Brass, piano and cymbals all sound great, the horns are detailed yet not fatiguing.  Bass is detailed as well, a full and powerful bottom end with a speed unexpected from a 15.  Vocals are pure, like being in the room, plenty of inflection, but neutral, no artificial warmth or other artifacts.  The overall presentation is neutral but the sound is engaging, the timing between instruments gives a nice sense of the music and along with the dynamics gets your toe tapping or body moving.

I did notice when playing a Reference Classical recording with very deep bass from pipe organ and such the 4367 fell short of delivering in that extreme bottom region.  It is rated to go down to 30Hz but I didn't experience it.  I didn't have the spikes but I wouldn't think that to be the issue.  However, bass is ample so you probably couldn't tell unless you play a lot of these types recordings.  The soundstage was wide but due to the horns the top of the soundstage didn't arc up like a typical dome style tweeter.  This isn't a thing for me but could be for some I suppose.

The 4367 is 6 ohm and 94dB efficient, comes in walnut or black woodgrain.  The front baffle is blue as in the JBL pro line.  Well, I had the walnut with blue baffle, I believe the black is all black.  There are two sets of binding posts.

A poster on a JBL website gave an apt analogy likening the 4367 to a sports car and in comparison your TAS type speakers to luxury cars.  The 4367 will lay bare the recording yet in a fun and exciting way.  The luxury car will smooth some of the bumps and provide comfort but you'll not get the sports car excitement.
