Lots of questions about amp build
« on: 28 Dec 2015, 02:18 am »
Hi everyone, please bare with me, lots of random questions for amp build. A little background first about builds. I have 6 aluminum cases for amp modules and power supplies. 2 amps using linear PS and 1 using connex smps. Because the cases are a little to small to fit everything together I am putting the amp modules and power supplies in  seperate cases attached with nutrik type power connectors. Here's the questions in numbered order: 1-when attaching pcb's to standoffs are stainless steel screws  ok or should I be using a special type? 2-when attaching stand-offs to amp case, is it ok to isolate them with small rubber o-rings to help reduce vibrations, or does it need to be metal to metal for grounding off the pcb's to the case? 3-when attaching PS leads is it better to solder or use quick connects? 4-when making the short ambilical cord between amp case and PS case is it better to shield the wires or just wrap them in teflon heat shrink? 5-when running power cable out of PS case  is it ok to skip the iec jack and hard wire it with a good strain relief built into the case(seems like it would be a better connection with less resistance overall)? Thanks so much for taking the time to read this long series of questions and offering any advice or experience! Justin

1.  I like to use brass screws myself.

2.  It depends on the pwb, and other factors.  Grounding is pretty complicated.  You need to consider safety obviously, and then look at how the current needs to return.  Sorry to be so vague here.

3.  I like to solder connections, and will solder whenever I can.

4.  Not sure, but I normally wouldn't shield.  You can try and see if it makes a difference.

5.  Like I said, I like to solder.  The advantage to IEC is that it lets you try different power cords.
