I think I have the nerf ball pre-installed in my speakers.

Not sure I follow. So....you don't know if you have a Nerf ball stuffed in the ports of your speakers or not?

Oh. OK. That makes sense now. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the SA XRS to be able to help. I'm sure others will chime in.

Those of you who have this option, what are your experiences with the nerf balls? How far from the front wall are your speakers and room size?

I think I have the nerf ball pre-installed in my speakers. I could of course experiment myself, but I'm pretty happy as it is and I seem to just listen to the music when the occasion arise

I have my nerfs installed on my Hoyt Bedford Type 1's.  The nerf balls make my two subs sound better.

I have Omega Super 6 Alnicos from the "Custom Shop". These are floorstanders with a bottom firing port. Older model with no tilt-back.

They came with plastic wrapped nerf balls blocking the port.

My room is about 14 x 24 x 8. Speakers are about 3 feet out from front wall and a bit off center from the side walls. Maybe 8 feet apart. I also have a single SVS sub which mates well.

I have experimented a bit.

The nerf balls make the speaker more coherent or cleaner, especially from mid-bass up. They also seem a bit more dynamic that way. Removing them extends the bass but loses some imaging and coherence.

I run them with nerfs in place and plastic is removed. Removing the plastic bought a bit more bass without hurting the upper registers.

Experiment. Remove the plastic. You can always re-wrap them.

If you want to have some fun,

Replace the Nerf Balls with Nerf Footballs (Cut them in half)

    It tightness up the sound,

Whether you prefer it or not YMMV.

I've run the (original with larger whizzer cone) Hoyt-Bedford Type 1 with and without the Nerf Balls, on, if memory doesn't fail me, a 20w/ch PP.  Much of the dynamics were lost with no gains, so out came the Nerf Balls.  The damping factor of the connected amplifier, the room acoustics, and other factors would determine whether the Nerf Balls are used or not.  I also had Type 1.5s (with latest smaller whizzer cone driver) on the same amp without Nerf Balls and the sound was sublime with lots of dynamics and no boom or bloom in the bottom end.

In all my years in dealing with ported speakers, I've never had one that sounded better (when it was set up optimally) when the ports were plugged in some manner.

These are an older set of speakers.  It's the same port the aperiodic 8 used years ago.  Sort of a leaky sealed cabinet.  What you feel is not Nerf, and not removable.
