boxes for storing vinyl.
« on: 9 Dec 2015, 01:31 am »
Well as a by product of getting house in order to sell, it was discovered I have black mold in basement, and it's attacked the 1st floor subfloor. So the wooden floor in my dining room and living room will have to be removed to get at the subfloor to replace it.

My 3 ikea bookcases with all my vinyl live in my living room.

So I'll have to pack the vinyl away for awhile.

Question - does anyone have a recommendation for a box that seems ideal for storing vinyl?

Moving companies have boxes that are ideal for storing and moving vinyl.

During the roughly 15 years I had my TT packed away I stored my albums in these (& similar) containers in my detached, unconditioned garage - http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-1172-ActionPacker-Storage-Gallon/dp/B00002N6SQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449626029&sr=8-2&keywords=rubbermaid+large+storage+boxes  . They are available in various sizes.

They are pretty much perfect width, and you can get a sizeable number in each. Now moving them when full can get tricky, but they do have good handles with flip latches. Everything I had stored made it thru those years undamaged, and still sound sweet on the old Thorens.

Beware! Black mold is awful stuff - people with weak immune systems can die from it! I've gotten it before and I stayed in bed for about 24 hours with no energy to even get out of bed! (I thought I had the flu.)

Clean with a bleach solution.

Laura - good idea.

AD - they look nice, but at almost $60 a pop, more than I want to go for.

Bleach is not the answer.  Use an industrial germicide like Microban.  Did great for my old house

+1!   25 years as a military family and those were perfect!   And we moved a LOT!

Hi ET,    I live in Maine and there are these real rugged plastic tubs that are perfect for all your records and are strong enough to hold enough records to give one man a hernia fully loaded. They are called (fish totes) and used for lobster pounds. No one ever buys them, there all around like plastic milk crates. People use them, then if not needed bring them back to where they found them. I bet if you found a seafood store around you and talked to the owner he might lend you a few. They are much stronger than anything you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. Just wash them out with a hose and soapy brush. Looking at your albums I would say you need 4 to 5. They stack up too if your cramped for space and they are indestructable. They have handles so find a helper.
I've moved a zillion times and my vinyl moving was always up there with pianos, refrigerators, and pull out bed couches as far as the suck factor goes. Take care....Mark Korda

Thanks Mark, I'll look around. Being from S. Boston originally, I think I know the totes you speak of.

Understand Gene. Back when I got them, in the last century, they were about $20 or so. If I was closer you could borrow some of mine, but shipping cross country would negate any savings. Good luck with the hunt, the remediation, and the move. Always more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
