A number of times I have read references to testing your tubes before using them. How do you do that and what equipment is needed/recommended?

Well, I recommend a Hickok if you want to get a reliable tester for selling.  Precise 111 is a good value tester.  Building a UTracer is another option.  The last option has a bunch of plus and minuses.  The greatest being that there is no shorts or gas test.  Sigh.
