Why not Alnico RS5?
« on: 9 Nov 2015, 10:43 pm »
Of all my harebrained posts here, this probably tops them all...

Alnico supposedly has a type of response that makes it more musical to some ears. Probably mine too.

But the RS5 has excellent speed and superb dispersion.

So why not alnico RS5?

Louis looked into it awhile back and decided against it.

I assume this is because the price to performance ratio just didn't make sense in an RS5 application?

Louis had an 5 inch AlNiCo in development for a long time before giving up on it a few years back.

Fostex sells a F120A which is a 5 inch AlNiCo extended range driver.  Currently on sale for "just" $220 each (roughly twice the price of most 5 inch extended range drivers).  Specifications: 65-20,000 Hz, 89 dB/w/m, 8 ohms so not your typical extended range driver efficiency.  I've owned it's big brother F200A (similar design) for 10+ years which goes deeper and is slightly more efficient (now discontinued) and love it (doesn't have the thin/forward midrange that most extended range driver exhibit).
