Several years ago someone went all out with the old Bolder Cable Co Eastern Electric DAC modifications. As I recall Daedalus Audio made a wood case for it and the full modification was ~$6,000 - $7,000.
I never heard what happened to it and ultimately if it performed well enough to justify the cost. There were and are many great DACs available at that price point.
