JBL L50 and Decade 16 WOW!!!
« on: 16 Oct 2015, 01:57 am »

Just picked 2 pairs of speakers the JBL L50 and Decade 16 by JBL,  came home and paired it with my Cary Audio SLI 80, Budgie tube phono pre amp and my Technics SL1200MK2 and some vinyl from Marvin Gaye "let's get it on" WOW! Just audio orgasm indeed... The L50 sound amazing and the 16 sound very good indeed but these L50 just sound amazing.  JBL truly knew what they were doing back in the days... Well I am happy and overwhelmed with musical joy.  Now grant it that JBL made other speakers that are hard to find these days but I got lucky that I got these from a retired electrical engineer who's passion is to work, refurnished JBL speakers...

Just wanted to share my joy  :D

Aren't those turntables worth so much you could sell it and buy a significantly better one? I read something about it awhile back.

Looks good, lots of tubes and vinyl.

Very Nice! Did you get the funky grills with the L50's?

Why get a "better one" when you can stay with a vintage Tecnicss?  Plus these TT can be madded by KAB USA~  There's no need on my end to purchase another TT~   :nono:

Good stuff, I have always enjoyed those old JBL's. Definitely suited for dancing and parties rather then analytical listening.

I wholeheartedly disagree about the "analytical listening" statement. Many studio professionals use the JBL 4310/11/12 for studio recording and mastering.  So that's not considered critical listening?

I remember listening to the JBL 100's years ago.  Thought they were good at the time, if over priced.  They still bring a premium.  You've got a very cool vintage system there.   :thumb:

I found a pair of JBL L77 on a tree lawn last summer in pretty bad condition so I refinished the cabinets, had the drivers refoamed and they sound wonderful. I also have a pair JBL L26's that were my first real hifi speakers. I have had a love hate relationship with them for over 30 years. I like the L77's smooth and warmer sound better than the l26"s.

Maybe it's time I dragged my old JBLs out of storage to see what the mice have done to the poor things.
Congratulations on your "new" speakers, by the way!

As a full time audio professional, that's not true in my experience. Granted I currently work in post production full time, but even when I did work in music studios, I rarely saw those old passive JBL's in action. That is not to say that JBL's are not popular, they actually are, just not those old passives. The powered LSR series is used in just about every post production house in Los Angeles (which is where I work). I'm sure 20+ years ago they were used, but I saw a lot more of the big old Urei's(809, 813,815) then the JBL's.

Post #95 in that thread I linked to (as well as some other posts) are written by folks in the know and have an insider's perspective on the market.
Part of what was said in post 95 was "Let's face it guys, high end audio sales are a fly speck on the overall consumer electronics picture".
The thread is worth skimming for other contributions, like post #72 for example.
