Cassettes, baby, that’s where it's at!

You know you want it! It’s OK, no one has to know.

This has to have a place in someone’s audio rack…no?

Purchased new by me because I thought I had to have the capability back in the day. If this saw more than 30 or so cassettes in its well, I’d be surprised. It’s been in storage for 12 years, getting seasoned up for the next 20. Cassette decks are like wine, you know.

Comes with all you see, including the killer interconnects. Paid $379 in 1995, which would be about two grand in today’s dollars…right?
So here’s the deal; I’ll give this to some lucky basement-dwelling troll with these provisions.
1.   Must have at least 50 posts here, can’t just swoop in and get this fine piece, the Karma just wouldn’t be right.
2.   You agree to pay shipping (13 lbs.) from Boise, ID 83703 to wherever you are CONUS. PayPal’s fine or gold.
3.   And last but not least, you’ll have to be a lucky guesser.

I’ll use a random generator to choose a number between 1 and 50 on Sunday, October 18th. We’ll figure out the freight, you pay me and *boom* it’s coming your way.

Don’t get caught on the sidelines, opportunities like this don’t come around often, eh?

Funny   I've used my deck a couple of years back and probably a few years before that once or twice.  One of these days, I should go through my cassettes in the closet and decide if anything is worthwhile to digitize and get rid of my deck too.  I remember the days of buying a MoFi record album and recording it the first play through

I might even still have one of these in the garage in a plastic bin (have not looked in a couple of years)

Hi Peter,
I will not participate and leave the chance to another AC member
to win that beautifull piece.
I own a Nakamichi BX-100 that need overall,
I will get it overalled by Doc Nak in USA when I have $$$
because I want to keep it,
I have many C90 Sony cassettes and I would like to record more,
mainly from my LPs.
Good luck to AC members.
Very generous of you, thanks.

Hi Phil A,
I had a Sony walkman similar to yours,
but it failed and was behond repairs.
Too bad, I really like it,
but on the other hand, I have now an iPod.
Still, I become nostalgic when I see stuff like that.

Back towards the end of 1996, right before a move, I gave away my Nakamichi 680 (which just needed minor repair to the rubber parts) to a guy who worked at a local audio shop who was always helpful to me.  I kept my old Onkyo deck (I think it is in the garage) as I figured that's enough to playback the tapes I have (along with my dbx 224) and I figured I'd get rid of the vehicle I had (GMC Jimmy 2-door with off road suspension) within few years and then I probably wouldn't need a cassette deck.  I put the deck in the basement system when I finished the basement around 2006 and over the next 7 or so years before my current move I think I used it 3 times briefly.  I loved the 680 but knew that for me cassettes were a limited time frame of use.  I had about 40 audiophile albums I taped and maybe 10 or so pre-recorded tapes.  They are in a closet now.

Peter,
I'll take #24 and thanks for offering.  (Yes, I sill have about 300 cassettes, all free jazz and early rock. Nothing wrong with that.)
Cheers,
KP

I have several cassette decks and even still use them from time to time. Most are older models but I have gone through them all and installed new belts.
I still like to listen to cassettes. I won't guess a number as I already have a few decks but I think it's a cool thing you're doing.
Hey... vinyl and tubes came back so who knows :thumb:

Since I lost my Revox A77 reel to reel, I had (for the first time in 4 decades) no tape recorder in the house. I stumbled across a barely used Nakamichi DR-3 cassette deck. Wow, no want for a reel to reel any more. Tape is great.

I hope someone takes up the OPs generous offer and throws out a number. I certainly don't need another one.

Does it work?

You know, I hadn't considered that it might not work. It occupied space on rack and worked when we moved 12 years ago. Been in the box ever since. I suppose I could test it, but don't think I own a single cassette anymore. Let me nose around and see what I can find.

Does some part of it's guts deteriorate with age?

Hmmmm, can I assume that a change of heart caused you to join Michael in the "over 50" section?

The belts do. I think lack of use is not good for a belt drive deck. I had 20 decks I used for real-time cassette duplication. I used them from around 1992 to 2005 without incident, but after an idle period of about two years almost half would not work - and the rest failed soon after. It never occurred to me that it might be as simple as a belt replacement, so I gave them away. Originally, they were $450 decks - Aiwas.

Ok, I scrounged around and found a cassette...The Dead Milkmen, Big Lizard in My Backyard. It was in the hell drawer of my toolbox. It's playing as we speak, er....as I type.

The music sucks, but there wasn't a choice. It plays so I'll assume it'll record too.

And just so y'all know, I had some second thoughts about rehoming it, but talked myself right out of that.

It really is pristine, if there's an imperfection, I'm not seeing it, but then I'm not selling it on Agon, so maybe that doesn't matter.

Gees, even if you just set it on your rack, it's a really nice black box with buttons and lights and stuff so you can impress your friends. That alone worth price paid, methinks.
