Western Electric 396A Tubes
« on: 7 Oct 2015, 08:05 am »
I brought a pair of Western Electric 396A Tubes that i recently purchased to my local electronics store to be tested. That number was not in there catalog. Neither was 5670 which is an equivalent value. I know the work. I just want to make sure they are matched. Any ideas on what to do?

Hi, gman74.

Since your post is about vacuum tubes, and this is the solid state circle, I'm going to move this over to the Tube-O-Phile circle. That's where you're more likely to find good answers to your questions.

Best regards,

Michael

The 2C51 is an equivalent.  That should be in the tube tester database.

Thank you Michael.

And thank you Scott, I will see if they have that.

I am still open to other suggestions just in case.

Michael is right, but you should ask what tester they have before you go back there so you can have the settings with you as well.  I am sure we can find you settings if their roll chart is missing the 2C51.  If it is a Hickok, this page will have all the settings for the 2C51 (or you could try the WE supplemental data if it is a 539B).  http://www.stevenjohnson.com/hickok/data.htm).

I called the store and they told me the Tube Tester is a Mercury Electronics.

I found a PDF chart from 1968 to down load. But I did not see 396a, 5670, 2C51, 6385, 6CC42, 6N3P. I did see 6N3, but I don't know if that will work.

I replaced the crappy Chinese 6n3 tubes in my Dared 2a3 amp with the WE 396a/2c51 and wow what an improvement.

The WE 396a/2c51 are creme dela creme
