I also have my AVA Phono installed in an AVA pre-amp, which saves quite a bit.  I really like the house sound, and did not hesitate. Have not compared it with other phono preamps in my setup.

Once again-- the best thing is to audition it in your system, and return it if you decide so.

Thanks to Art_Chicago and Minn Mark for their replies. After perusing AVA's website, I would dearly love to own an Ultravalve tube amp, but that is out of my financial range.
