1801's in Spanish DIY/Audio meeting
« on: 13 Oct 2004, 09:48 pm »
Hi there, I've been this weekend at a spanish DIY/Audio Meeting and brougth the Ellis with me ...

General consensus has been that they were the best on its category, the main thing ppl loved abt them was the sound stage and the detail they gave.

A few photos of the show

A quote of a very experienced listener on the audience.

"They sound better than many 10000$ speakers that I have heard"

I checked the page with the thumbs, but I couldn't make them bigger.  Am I doing something wrong?

I think it's really neat that you have an old reel-to-reel, but I am interested to discuss the matter of amplifiers with you.  Unfortunately, I can't see the pictures.  It appears there is one amp with KT-88s.

Now it's working.  The problem was probably an impatient operator.  After allowing the entire page to load it works just fine.

Great stuff.  The 1801s are as uncolored as any speakers I've ever heard.  I wish I still had them.  But a'las I've been speakerless for over a year know.

I don't think you can really find better components with a better crossover for less than 5k (in 2way designs).

THE PHY open baffle

Salva, I noticed that there was a PHY 12" driver based open baffle in the meeting.  Can you tell me whether you have listened to them or not.  If you did, how did they sound?  Were the lows sufficient or weak?  How were they driven?  Do you think they justify all their raving out there?

Nope, I have not heard the PHY, (at least in detail to comment),  there was too much going on and I did not hat time for that.
One of the things that I learned though is that the ellis are very sensitive (as any speaker) to room acoustics. With the ellis the situation is even worse (I guess that due to the high dispersion of the Hiquphon).

First we tested the speakers on a small room, close to the wall on a similar condition that the one I have in my home, the sounded to me same as in my home.

Then we moved them to a much larger room  and boy, the sound image, and space they gave was a league ahead.

So, beware of room acoustics they are VERY important.
