Hello from Reno
« on: 15 Sep 2015, 07:42 pm »
Hello everyone!  I'm new to this forum, but have on occasion made sales/purchases on other sites.  I'm slowly getting used to navigating your site.  I'm into tubes as well as some SS, with a side bar interest in steel fabrication/woodworking.  I recently finished building a rack for my system which I am pretty proud of.  My primary system consists of VK-3i tube pre, VK-500 SS amp, PS audio DAC, a dedicated cheapo computer to run JRiver, and a VPI Scout II with a Dynavector cart in a difficult 300 square foot room. In the near future I hope to purchase a mic and experiment with audio correction software.  I spend about 20% of my time listening to vinyl.  I'm a recent empty nester, and I have the opportunity to turn my daughter's old bedroom into a dedicated sound room so I have been spending more time recently lurking around the for-sale areas.
Looking forward to talking with you folks,
Russell

Welcome aboard.  That's some classic gear.  What speakers are you running?  Could you describe that "difficult" 300 s.f. room?  I imagine a daughter's bedroom would be quite different challenge.  Check out the Acoustics Circle.

Greetings & Welcome Russell. Lots of good folks here, and enough vinyl-philes/phools to keep you busy talking/spinning as much as you'd like.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I can't believe I forgot to list my speakers!  I'm running 5 year old Monitor Audio RX8's.  I like them, but I've been in the market to trade up for a couple years.  Of course there are several speakers that I just cannot audition.  Lately I've been interested in the Scansonic MB 3.5, Revel F208, Salk Veracity HT2-TL, and the PSB Imagine T3.  Unfortunately, I just can't hear them anywhere.  Even if I happen to travel to a city with a decent audio store, I am usually with my wife who just isn't as in to it as I.  She's good for about 45 minutes, I could spend hours in a good shop.  I spent a day at CES last January listening, but there are just too many variables, noise, people talking, etc. to make a real evaluation.  I am envious of my friend's Pioneer S-3EX's.  They sound phenomenal at his place.  However, I wonder if they would sound as nice in my room.  I have windows covering the wall behind my speakers, windows covering the left wall, a weird built in shelf with windows atop to my rear, and the fourth right side is an opening to an adjoining room.  There is carpet, and beams on the ceiling.  The room doesn't echo, but only sounds great in the exact center.  Worst of all, the bass really drops off at the seating position.  I have the speakers about 3.5' from the rear wall, and probably 5-6' from  the sides.  I'm thinking my next step is to buy a mic and try Room EQ Wizard.  Any thoughts?

Check out the Acoustics Circle.

JLM - thanks for pointing me to the Acoustics circle.  I'm reading your comments on another user's issue which is very similar to mine.  Good stuff!
